Friday, October 25, 1996 Vandy ne> BRYAN JOHNSTON Asst. Sports Editor The Gamecocks will have their second chance of the year to put together a threegame winning streak. Earlier, after wining their first two games against Central Florida and Georgia, USC fell to East Carolina, 237. This time, after coming from behind to beat Kentucky and Arkansas, Carolina will go for three in a row when they travel to Nashville to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. "Vandeibilt is one of those teams that has had a tough-luck season. They've played a very difficult schedule and they've been very close only to come up a little bit short," USC head coach Brad Scott said. Vanderbilt is one of the SEC's worst teams, but have been known to give teams fits. They have either looked semigood or really bad Vanderbilt played Notre Dame (a 14-7 loss) and Alabama (a 36-26 loss) tough before dropping the games, yet looked awful against Mississippi (a 20-9 loss), LSU (a 35-0 loss) and North Texas (a 19-7 win). USC enters the game with a 4-3 record overall and 3-2 in the SEX). The Commodores are 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the SEC. The Gamecock defense has been playing well lately and this week's opponent should help their stats. Dunnavant has 78 carries for 247 yards. He averages 3.2 yards per rush and 41.2 yards a game. Vandy averages only 10.5 points a game and only 237.8 yards of total offense per outing. The Commodore passing attack is ranked 10th in the SEC. Quarterback Damian Allen is only 72-153 for 950 yards with five interceptions and two touchdowns. Allen's favorite targets are wide receivers Todd Yoder and Zach Winkler. Yoder has caught 15 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns. Winkler has 10 receptions for 60 yards. The Gamecocks defense is fourth in the SEC and 17 nationally. They are giving up only 283.6 yards per contest. This is due largely to the play of the linebackers and the secondary. Junior linebacker Darren Hambrick is the third leading tackier on the team with 55 stops (29 solo). Junior linebacker Shane Burnham has made 61 tackles (28 solo). Senior linebacker Benji Young had the best game of his career last week when he had 11 tackles, one QB pressure, one caused fumble one tackle for loss and one pass broken up. As a result of his performance, he was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. The USC pass efficiency rating is second in the SEC and 10th nationally. They are allowing opposing QB's just a 43% completion rate and have intercepted seven passes. Sophomore free safety Arturo Freeman is the team's leading tackier with 67 total hits (36 solo) and senior cornerback Terry Cousin leads the club with seven passes broken up. Cousin broke his left hand in the Arkansas game, which required surgery, but is expected to play Saturday. Over the past four games, the Carolina defense has allowed just 233.3 yards of total offense per outing. He was responsible for the Commodores lone nnints last week against Georgia when [ D O he recorded a safety. "Ihey keep coming at you on defense," Scott said. "They're very smart and they read their keys well. They really play aggressively." One of the few bright spots for Vanderbilt is their special teams. Punter Bill Marinangel is the SECs top punter, averaging 46.7 yards per punt. He has had punts of 68 and 63 yards. Marinangel also has the league's longest run from scrimmage this year with an 81-yard ID run off a fake-punt against Alabama. Cornerback/kick returner Corey Chavous, a junior from Aiken, SC, averages 26 yards per kick-off return, good for second in the SEC. Punt returner Alvin Duke has returned 17 punts for 180 yards, an average of 10.6 per return. The bottom line is the Carolina can and should win this game. Better yet, USC has to win this game if they want to keep any hopes of going to a bowl game alive. USC stands at 4-3 and with a win, they will move to within one win of the minimum to be eligible for a bowl bid. This is Carolina's best shot at dominating a team before the season ends. After Vandy, they face Tennessee, Florida and Clemson. The Gamecocks offense should move the ball and the defense should shut down the Commodores. Special teams have been a problem of late for the Gamecocks and Vanderbilt is solid in that area I think this is a veiy dangerous game for our football team, on the road, at Vandy," Scott said. Carolina leads the all-time series 50, but the last they traveled to Nashville, they came out of there with a hard-fought 19-16 win. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. and can be heard on The Gamecock Sports Network on 560 AM or can be ordered on pay-per view trom your local cable operator it you live off-campus. iat Charleston Smith, a midfielder from Benfleet, England, helped lead the Gamecocks to three wins this past week, including a 7-1 victory over Mississippi. Kay Floyd, his wife, is the former Kay Barker of Timmonsville and a 1956 USC graduate. * "On behalf of the Gamecock athletics family, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to Eddie Floyd and his wife, Kay, for their generosity and lifelong support of Carolina," athletics director Mike McGee said. "The Floyds have been a part of the university for nearly 45 years and have been staunch and loyal supporters of athletics. "We are indebted to their support and service to our program. Because of their gift, the largest in our history, we are honored to have our football complex bear their name." DWAYNE MCLEMORE Asst Sports Edtor The Carolina volleyball team is away this weekend on what head coach Kim Hudson calls "our toughest road trip," taking on conference foes Louisiana State and Arkansas. The Lady Gamecocks are 16-4 on the season after sweeping the College of Charleston Tuesday night. The team will be looking this weekend to expand on its best-ever SEC start of 6-1. Hudson said the two matches are very important. "This is certainly a pivotal point in the season," Hudson said. 1 think being able to win on the road against LSU and Arkansas will be a red good indicator of things to come for November and December." The $1.86 million dollar project is a three-story building that includes offices and meeting rooms for the coaches, a recruiting area and "Gamecock Gear," an apparel and speciality store for Gamecock athletic wear. Future plans call for the construction of a state-of-the-art video production studio. The football office complex was built immediately after the press box and the luxury suites were completed at the start of 1995 football season. After the football office was completed, construction began on the new, upper deck at the south end zone that includes the "In The Zone" luxury seating area, and the scoreboard. Tigers. Carolina lost to LSU at home last season and then went on to defeat them in the SEC tournament. The team is led by head coach Scott Luster, who has a 296-134 record while coaching for LSU. The Lady Tigers lead the overall series with Carolina 6-3. Carolina travels to Fayetteville, Ark., Sunday to do battle with the Lady Razorbacks, a place where Hudson said is difficult to play. Carolina has won the teams' only two meetings. Arkansas is 16-6 on the season and 6-1 in the SEC. The team, which is ranked third in District Four, will be the host for Florida tonight. The Lady Razorbacks are coached by Chris Poole, who is 44-32 in his two years at Arkansas. Both matches will be broadcast on 1400 AM, beginning 10 minutes before each contest.
