One of Palms' goals is to have more professors do research, which will improve USC's national standing. With a solid research base, USC will be eligible to join the American Association of Universities, which is made up of the top 50 schools in the United States. If USC should become a major research institution nationally, the value of our degrees will increase, but the value of our educations may not necessarily increase. Yeah, eveiyone thinks Southern Baptism when you mention our fine state, but it's all a lie. Think about it. We do funny, little steps to chants (known as "shagging"), and we have a shaman with a portable idol (surely, you've seen Bob Peeler and his cow). And in the fall (around All Hallows Eve - hint, hint), we gather in a large group for a couple of weeks, stay up all night, gorge, spin around madly and then throw up. Geez, all thafs missing is an orgy. Yes, kids, it's the South Carolina State Fair (are you hearing the music accompanying those magical words?). w^n T v,^ a ~r i? tt^h, x 11 can juijr auac Ui licatlicilisil fun this past weekend. Somehow, as you walk into the Fair, the smells of comdogs and pizza inundate you and make you take part in the grease. Even if you've eaten a five-star, fourcourse meal five minutes before, you will indulge in grease at the Fair. I suspect there is a heart-attack quota in South Carolina and the Fair is the way to fill it. Ifs not that hard if you add Coke and take quick glances. Yes, I snoop. Blessed with speed reading and a photographic memory, I've been able to memorize nearly everyone's ATM pin number, which is useless without the card. This is why I've adapted the same skills to the computer lab. If students are willing to let the library and dorm goons check their bass, thev should have no problem with revealing their personal lives to one of their own. Fellow students, I applaud you! Your electronic letters reveal insightful, well-organized thoughts that paint a far better portrait of life at USC than this paper. Or maybe ifs the Jack Daniels. From reading the latest batch of postDole an effe< To the editor I'm writing in response to your article on the recent presidential debates, and how USC students viewed the outcome. When I was a kid, I thought cotton candy was the most delicious treat ever to grace my tongue. Now that I'm older, I wonder what I thought was so stellar about air? I mean, cotton candy is an illusion. It disappears in your mouth, not in your hand. How many calories can there be in a mouthful of air anyway? And Tried Dough." Such a wonderful advertising campaign. No bones about it. What we have here is Fried Dough. And people flock to the stuff Those people with trucks that say "Elephant Ears" or "Funnel Cakes" are just wishing they . had the keen business sense of the Fried Dough people. The highlight of my evening at the Fair had nothing to do with food. No, my moment came during Richard's Racing Pigs, Ducks and Roosters Show. Now that is real entertainment. Standing outside in bitter, twilight cold watching ducks scramble up a ramp and dive into a pool is true bliss. I don't know why I do this eveiy es, small deta weekend mail, one would think we have a strong football team and everyone's having sex. Apparently, people weren't in the same stadium and bedroom as I was Saturday. The secret to reading e-mail, whether your own, or the unassuming typist next to you, is to cut through the exaggerations and self-congratulations to find the small details, the gripes, the teardrops that form our pool of social ills. What shall follow is a paraphrasing of two popular problems that USC students have shared with their friends and with me, followed by commentary. "... My roommate is (hiving me crazy! She refers to everything as the Bomb.' Ex. 'Ohmigod, this baked potato is the Bomb!. .m The Breath Assure people have popularized this expression in an inaccurate, late-night commercial (we all know Sunny Delight is "the Bomb"). While the article "the" implies the existence of only one "bomb," hyperbolizing students have assigned bombasticity to ctive leader, n evolved student went so far as to call this great American war hero "an old fart." Boy, there is an intelligent response to a Dresidential debate. What's next hair styles and suit brands? Bob Dole may not be the youngest or most handsome gent on the ballot, but he can still be a very effective leader (After all, his recent health record was higher than the' wanna-be Republican" s__ everyone else faces like or from classes tired." , on National Coming Out Day ty, health year, but somehow I always end up wandering buildings filled with cows. This is okay, except the stench accompanying the rooms filled with cows. You can actually watch people running through the cow room holding their noses. "Look at that cow, Joe!" "Yeah, thafs one fine piece of cow, Marge. Now let's get the hay out of Dodge!" The rides are something else I admire the person who came up with the ridesfor-tickets system. You could pay up to five dollars to go through the Zany Xylophone Funhouse and think "oh well, it's only nine tickets." And whoever decided to put rides that literally fling you upside down next to Fried Dough carts obviously had some big plans to start a vomit farm. I went through one of the "fun" houses. I use "fun" a bit loosely because my idea of a good time is obviously quite different from those of the creators of Schmushousen Funhouse. You see, my idea of fun involves, well, fun. The guys who built the Schumushousen think fun is to run through dark corridors, cross moving brjdges (many of which do not work) and crawl through a spinning tube. The whole thing was sort of tricky anyway because the front was painted bright and "fun" looking, and you can ils keys to re; nearly every object, diluting the intended effect. My summer roommate was a perpetrator of this syntax error until the Centennial Park bombing put her at a loss of words. Yet the expression remains in high circulation. So what should you do when someone close to you adopts this speech impediment? Communication gurus would say that words have no meaning, it's only how you interpret it, so don't let it get to you. But leave the experts to their viewless offices and book royalties. We need some peace of mind to go with our 50 percentbuyback guarantee. Don't hang around people or things that bug you even if it means walking to the Grand Marketplace alone or switching fraternities. . .my roommate's mother took us all out to lunch... now my roommate's saying she doesn't have to pay for cable this month..." The driving force of each and every one of us is the need to get credit. Noone does something without expecting ot too old to Bill Clinton). There was also a comment questioning Mr. Dole's intelligence. Yes, I know no one trusts politicians nowadays, but you have to be a pretty intelligent man to become such an influential part of American politics for the last three decades. He may not be as charismatic a speaker as Bill Clinton, but Bob Dole has a personality*^ 3_ 1 1 \ 3 \ v (\ i lJ 1 tiering hazards see all kinds of cool things from the outside, but, once you go in, everything is old, dark and unpainted, and a grouchy old man stares at you as if to say, "What's an old person like you doing running through a half-working funhouse anyway?" My other ride experience was the swing that spins around and around. I usually love that swing because it is relaxing, and you have a great view. However, this time as the swing started to rise, I heard one of my chains rattle me realizing it was loose. Well, I spent that entire ride holding onto those chains and trying not to lean forward or backward. To make matters worse, the Macarena came on the loudspeakers while I was swinging, and the irresistible urge to do the Macarena was just too much for my feeble mind. Even though my very life was endangered, I Macarened. If this doesn't prove to you how dangerous the thing is, nothing will. Fortunatelv. Ill survive the Fair at least until I hit forty, and all those helpings of Fried Dough catch up with pie... iding e-mail something in return even if the benefit is received posthumously, as with the religious. But getting credit for something you didn't do is a tough trick to pull off. There's a fine line between your parents' money and your own. In this age of class warfare, your friends and roommates will be suspicious of the source of your funds. Keep it a secret because they will not give you full credit for a known, parental expenditure (usually no more than 30 cents on the dollar). In other words, don't expect them to match you beer for beer if they know you're using daddy's credit card; they'll lamely come up with "lefs leave this bar, I'm out of cash." As for meals paid by a parent, order as much as you can, but be sure to say thank you. The son's or daughter's credit will be being able to feel smug with the idea that you'll get him/her back when your parents visit.
