According to the policy, an instructor may exact grade penalties if a student is absent from more than 10 percent of the scheduled class sessions, whether the absences were excused or unexcused. An attendance policy is sensible because it provides guidance for immature students who don't understand the importance of going to class. It also makes sure the instructor's lesson plan is not ruined because of a lack of class attendance. For young adults in college, however, an attendance policy is excessive and unnecessary. We are old enough, and should be mature enough, to decide for ourselves whether or not we want to go to class. Clinton and Dole made some very costly mistakes. They lost their audience in the first half of the debate. They talked about legislation and policies no one probably has any idea about. They kept referring to and bickering over bills that people didn't even recognize, much less realize if they were important to them or not. This probably turned off a lot of people and was detrimental to both Clinton and Dole. By the second half, things picked up though, giving us a hint of what could happen with the next debate. The candidates started talking about their "visions" for the future of the country, and that is the thing they disagree upon most. The USC attendance policy is a good idea in theory, but it fails to teach us one of the most important lessons we all learn in college: responsibility. We will never learn how to live and work in the real world if the university is constantly doting over us to make sure we go to dass for 10 percent of the scheduled class sessions. If you don't go to work in the real woiid, you will get fired. Your boss won't coddle you to make sure you show up for work everyday. USC should adopt the same policy. Everyone will admit that neither of these two candidates have perfect legislative records. They have both proposed, voted for or supported legislation that was questionable. That is all in the past, and now Airerica gets to decide its leader for the next century. Mr. Dole and President Clinton each have a plan for the future and it's up to us to decide which one we most agree with, if we agree with any at all. So it's good that these two candidates are talking about the future. Because, frankly, as college students we don't care about what Dole did in 1965 or even what Clinton did in 1993. Our generation is poised to enter the world and make it our own, and we are looking ahead of us, not behind. These guys, with whom I had spoke to before on a friendly basis, were walkin towards the stairs of Preston when made what I, and others presen perceived as a casual joke. One of the guys, who was underag and drunk, is a resident of Preston normally one of the most open-minde residences on campus. USC is a very diverse university wit a steady growing Latin community. I the 1995-96 Fact Book of USC, it state that in the fall of'95, there were 44 Hispanics enrolled at USC. The day before he was killed, I was driving down a road in my hometown of Irmo, 15 miles outside of Columbia. A young girl with a brown pony-tail was running around in the yard outside her home, by herself. She ran up to the side of the road, kind of close to my car and waved to me as I passed by, in what seemed like slow motion. I kept thinking to myself, "What's wrong with that girl?" What causes this kind of gay hatred? A study done by a psychologist at the University of Georgia sheds some light on the plight of gay'hatred. Gay hatred, according to the conclusion of his study, is fueled by repressed homosexual urges in homophobic men.
