existing," Brewer said.
Brewer said students were divided
over who was chosen as Homecoming
Queen.
"Anytime you select one individual
over another, they're going to be divided
over some kind of lines," Brewer said.
The guidelines for selecting the new
Homecoming royals for this year were
written by Franklin and Wright, with
suggestions from the Homecoming
Commission. The commission, which
usually handles all Homecoming events,
is not going to run the new Homecoming
Queen and King selection.
"The Homecoming Commission has
been planning Homecoming for the past
nine or 10 months," Lockhart said.
"Unfortunately, we cannot participate
in this program because we don't have

Sept. 25.
"They're going to provide a great deal
of support. Because they're so late in
their process, they're not able to now
shift over and take over this project too,"
Franklin said. "Since that's the case,
well go ahead and take care of it for this
year and welcome any support they can
give us."
Carothers said, "I think if Student
Government or the Homecoming
Commission can develop a plan that has
the support of the student body, then it
can be successful. Without the support
of the student body, it will not be
successful."
According to SG's Queen and King
guidelines, the Homecoming
representative application process is

Screening process: All applications
will be initially judged by a group of
student leaders, administrators and
faculty members, which will select the
10 most-qualified males and the 10 mostqualified
females based on the criteria
of 50 percent leadership and 50 percent
academic success (GPR).
Final judging process: The judges
for the final round of the competition
will be made up of student leaders,
administrators and "celebrities."
For each of the ten finalists, the
interview will count 30 percent, the
leadership/service requirement and talent
competition (limited to 10 minutes per
finalist) will both count 20 percent, and
academic achievement and formal wear
appearance will both count 15 percent.
The Homecoming Queen and King
will each receive a $100 gift certificate
and their sponsoring organization will
receive $200.

Jeffcoat said the Department of
Justice, which owns the National
Advocacy Center, contributed the
money because construction of the
center would destroy 376 existing
parking spaces.
The remaining construction costs
for the garage were paid for by parking
revenue bonds.
The parking revenue bonds come
from the money students and faculty
pay for their parking spaces, and
parking tickets.
Along with the Bull Street garage
construction, repairs were made to
the garage on Blossom St The lighting
fixtures were replaced with new, high
pressure, sodium lighting.
"Safety was the primary concern
in replacing the lights. The new lights
are also brighter andmore efficient,"
Baker said.
