Vednesday, August 28,1996 Lady Gameco momemtumo The USC Volleyball team is preparing o begin one of its most anticipated seasons a the program's history. The team is coming off its most uccessful season ever, highlighted by a !1-11 record and a first-ever NCAA tournament victory. This season they will try to go further nto the NCAA Tournament, as well as ontinue to do battle for the school's firstver SEC Championship. Coach Kim Hudson returns for her ourth season with USC. She brings in an >verall record of 230-85, which includes 50-41 with the Gamecocks. Hudson will see her team open the lew Volleyball Competition/Basketball Practice Facility when USC hosts the Carolina Classic September 6-7. Hie Gamecocks will also host this year's SEC Volleyball Tournament November 12-24. The team did lose two important nembers from last year's squad, second?am All-SEC Kori Ermigarat and Cary Beeson, both of whom were seniors. "Not having their leadership and ;xperience will be a factor early in the ? 1 * J season, nuason saia. "Die Gamecocks, however, are returning bur starters and nine letterwinners, and lave a strong recruiting class. Heading the group is All-American unior Heather Larkin, who last season vas second on the team in kills, first in )locks,'and averaged .5 aces a game. She was also voted first-team All-SEC. Hudson feels Larkin is a strong candidate for the leadership role. "I have full confidence Heather will be me of the top middles in the conference," Hudson said. "We will ask her to step into the role of leader and we feel she is ready." Junior Shani Abshier, who is fully recovered from shoulder surgery, will also be expected to help fill the shoes of Ermigarat and Beeson. "Shani is ready to step up her play physically and emotionally," Hudson said. "I do not think you find a more dynamic and consistent er in the conference." Robarge is also expected to improve game after a strong season. Both her Edlund were named to the All-SEC rnament team, being the first from olina since USC joined the conference 991. Junior Lori Drost also returns, and is id by Hudson as giving great depth at middle position, as well as a right side :ker. Sophomores Stacy Donham and Erin uren round out the returnees. Donham oted for her strong serves and defense, le Toburen is an excellent outside hitter. Hudson is excited to see how the two tribute this season. The Gamecocks have three new Litions to this year's team. Fernanda Laires comes to USC from zil, Kathryn Stephenson from California, i Erin O'Donnell, who has been shirted, is from Nebraska.
