The SEC Champion this year will participate in the NCAA Championship Alliance (Sugar, Fiesta, Orange Bowls) with the possibility of a second team a? 11 '/?\t i t"\ participating as wen 11 ivotre uame fails to finish in the country's Top 10. If Notre Dame does qualify for a bowl, then the second place SEC team will advance to the Florida Citrus Bowl against the Big 10 Conference runnerup. The Outback Bowl will host the SEC third place team against the third place team of the Big 10. The Peach Bowl in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome will feature the SEC's fourth place team versus the third place team from the ACC. The final bowl the SEC has a contract with is the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La. This bowl will pit the SEC's fifth place team against an at large pick. Last year, the SEC went 2-4 in bowls. The only teams to win their bowl games were LSU over Michigan State in the Independence Bowl and Tennessee over Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl. The push for upward mobility in the SEC will be just as tough as usual seeing as not one player left either the Florida or Tennessee programs early for the NFL. But, Vanderbilt who had the worst SEC record last year lost two players to the big money of the NFL. A total of six players from the SEC were lured into professional football. Of those, only LSU wide receiver Eddie Tfprmisnn and defensive tackle Keith SPO is league sta coaches. Goff had the longest tenure of any SEC head coach with a tenure of seven years. Now that distinction belongs to Steve Spurrier of Florida, Gene Stallings of Alabama, and Kentucky coach Bill Cuny who are all have logged six years as coaches at their respective schools. Traditionally, the SEC has been called a power football conference because of their ability to schedule and then defeat tough non-conference foes. But, as in any conference, some schools will pad their schedule with several easy to defeat non-league opponents. The worst offenders of this are Arkansas, Ole Miss and LSU who have padded their schedule with non-league schools that are ranked in the bottom fourth of the nation in the pre-season power rankings. Darrin Hambrick leads a depleted linebacking core that could get better with more experience. The should be poor in depth and in talent, and it should only rate as the ninth best in the league. And finally, the South Carolina secondary should be better than average this year with the return of All-SEC safety Ben Washington and AllFreshman SEC selection Aurturo Freeman. The corners will be solid with the play of seniors Terry Cousin and Lee Wiggins. They should be the best fourth best secondary in the league and by far and away the most improved aspect of the Gamecocks squad this year. The youthful Gamecocks will be baptized by fire this year and will struggle especially on the road and against the experienced teams that have had great recruiting classes for the last five or six years. The thing to remember is that the Gamecocks will be youthful and may make some mistakes, but they will be excited about playing college football and hopefully, they can take that energy and produce some big wins here at the University of South Carolina this fall.
