I at Clemson Nov. 23 Clemson At A Glance 1995:8-4 overall, 6-2 ACC (3rd) Coach: Tommy West' At CUT: 14-10,2 years Overall: 18-17,3 years Returning starters: 14; 8 offense, 6 defense Players to watch: QB Nealon Greene, TB Raymond Jriester, FB Emory Smith, FL/KR Antwuan Wyatt, LB mthony bimmons, b Brian Uawkins Primary strengths: The Tigers have a veiy good running jame in Priester and Smith (Emmitfs younger brother). The lefense will also be solid with he return of linebacker Anthony Simmons. H Potential problems: Quarterback Nealon Green Tailed o throw for even 100 yards in four of the Tigers last seven james. Clemson also must find a pass rusher to replace Patrick 3app. The Tigers also only return three of the front seven on lefense. Off-the-field incidents in the off-season have given he Tigers not only some suspensions, but a bad image. Overview: Clemson was the hottest team in the ACC, vith five victories in a row, before the Gator Bowl debacle igainst Syracuse. It appears the Tigers have turned the comer ifter two losing seasons in three years, but their margin for jrror is slim. The quick QB is able to scramble and avoid the rushers. But it's who Greene will be handing the ball off to that will be exciting. Raymond Priester broke a school record with 1,322 rushing yards in 1995. He is joined by one of the country's premier fullbacks in Emory Smith, who scored 14 touchdowns. One-time tailback Antwuan Wyatt has turned into a quality receiver for the Tigers. One problem might be the offensive line. Clemson returns only two starters in tackle Jim Bundren and guard Glenn Rountree. Linebacker Anthony Simmons made 150 tackles as a true freshman last year when no other Tiger had more than 96 and no returning player had more than 53. Comeback Dexter McClean is coming off an outstanding junior year, when he shared the ACC lead with 13 pass breakups. Tackle Raymond White and outside linebacker Brett Williams join Simmons as the only returning starters in the front seven for the Tigers. Clemson must also find a replacement at kicker and punter. The return game is in good hands with Wyatt, the only Division I-A player to rank in the top 15 nationally in punt and kickoff returns. "Upward mobility in the SEC is a difficult thing to achieve, you have so many strong programs all after the same thing," said Brad Scott. This year, Brad Scott and his staff brought in a grej recruiting class. Most experts have ranked the Gamecock class as a Top 20 one. Some of these recruits will come in an make immediate impacts. Others will pop up in two or thr< years. Some of these recruits will never make it to Columbi; Such is the case with Rashonn Drayton. The 6-2,22 pound running back from Allentown, PA, told Gamecock far that "they were in for a treat" when they watched him pla; The BLUECHIP Dlustrated and Parade All-American wli rushed for 1,368 yards and 32 touchdowns during his seni< year, will not be in a Gamecock uniform this fall. You se Mr. Drayton did not qualify academically, so he will probabl take his talents to a junior college. Guess he'll have to tai his treats elsewhere. But then there are the recruits who will be valuable th fall. One is Courtney Leavitt. The consensus number-or rated placekicker in the country will be the punter from da; one, but if Reed Morton falters, look for Leavitt to step in. Y made 12-18 PG's his senior year in Germantown, TN, indudir successful kicks of 62,60,57 and 54 yards. Also look for wide receiver Jermale Kelly to make son: noise. The 6-3 Greenville native was "Mr. Football" in th state of South Carolina. He was also a member of th BLUECHIP Illustrated Top 25 region team. Kelly had 6 receptions for 1,544 yards and 10 Tlfs his senior year. But this year, coach Scott ventured to Florida to get son of his most touted recruits. The Lacoochee it native was named the Tampa Tribune Player of the Year 's after rushing for 1,731 yards and 36 touchdowns last season, 'd Also look for big things in the near future from fullback * Jacob Bush. The 6-0,235 pound Jacksonville native was a f' SuperPrep Ail-American, and an all-state and all-county selection. Bush rushed for 1,004 yards on 98 carries (10.3 yards per cany) with 14 ID'S his senior year. Bush is battling for starting fullback job with Steve Mixon. )r Other big-name recruits include Anthony Overstreet, e> Donovan Norman and Reggie Bak?-.\ Overstreet is a 6-3,235 ly pound defensive end who was ranked in the SuperPrep top :e 70 in the South. In 1995, he had 111 tackles and 10 QB sacks. Norman is the 6-1 SuperPrep Ail-American from Enoree who is had 46 catches for 580 yards and eight touchdowns.
