There are two important reasons th< Gamecocks are a step away from great ness. First of all, they are young, lb star things off, one of two sophomores, An thony Wright (a redshirt) or Chad Barn hardt, will direct the offense. Neithei have started a college game, so experi ence is a problem. The two are set t< battle it out in pre-season. Second, the Gamecocks have a ver difficult schedule. After an easy open er against Central rlonda, they hosi Georgia, East Carolina and Mississip pi State. Then, the tough part of their sched ule begins. Road games at Auburn anc Kentucky, followed by a home gamt against Arkansas should prove to be ? challenge. After a light week with Vanderbilt USC better hold on, because they're in for a rough trip. The defense should be much stronger this vear. and the offense has a lot of potential. If they come together, Carolina could be the Northwestern team of 1996.
