Scott Fitzgerald's birth in September will be highlighted by a talk by Joseph Heller and the opening of a collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald work and materials. Heller, author of Catch 22. Something Happened. Good As Gold and Closing Time will speak at a banquet at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The Fitzgerald exhibition, which will open at Thomas Cooper Library on Sept. 25, is valued at nearly $2 million. The collection was acquired by USC from Dr. Matthew J. Bruccoli, an F. Scott Fitzgerald scholar, USC's Emily Brown Jefferies, a professor of English, and Jefferies wife, Arlyn. The collection features one of two known copies of "Fie! Fie! Fi-Fi!," which Fitzgerald wrote for the Princeton University Triangle Club while a student there. It also includes Fitzgerald's manuscripts and letters, first-edition autograph< books, and such memorabilia a Fitzgerald's briefcase, whisky flasks, military commission records and a prep school track meaai. Bruccoli said he is most prouc of the original galley proofs of The Great Gatsfry. He said, "Fitzgerald rewrote 'Gatsby,' and he did it in galleys." He said the collection is a research archive that will bene fit scholars around the world. "It is valuable, not only because of the Fitzgerald materials, but also because of the books by and about Fitzgerald's friends and contemporaries, sucn as Hemingway, Lardner, Wolfe and Dos Passos." "I had never heard of Fitzgerald," he said. "I grew up in a house without books, but I ?d wanted to familiarize myself s with as many authors and their works as possible, so I asked my high school librarian about Fitzgerald." Bruccoli said he acquired a 1 copy of The Great Gatsbv. and has been passionate about Fitzgerald ever since. "It was that first chapter; the description of the Buchanans' lawn that caught me," he said. -fie put words together like no author I'd ever read before." Bruccoli said he purchased a dust-jacketed, first printing of The Great Gatsbv when he was a graduate student at the > University of Virginia. "My wife and I paid $35 for it, and we could afford to do it only in $5 installments.
