Longtime c For the first time in 20 years, USC must begin to look for a new baseball coach. Not since Bobby Richardson left in 1977 has USC changed the baseball program. But after three below average seasons, including a poor 25-28 showing this year, the Gamecocks will be forced to make a change as head coach June Raines decided to resign on May 15th. The resignation comes after several days ol discussion with Athletics Director Mike MoGee, who accepted the resignation after deciding the baseball team needed a change. Some low points of the season included a four game sweep at the hands of archrival Clemson and failing to qualify for the SEC Championships. Also, the team finished below .500 for the first time in 20 years and ended the season with seven consecutive losses. Raines lead the team to at least 40 wins in nine different seasons and directed USC tc the College World Series in 1977,1981,1982 and 1985. But the team's success has declined in recent years and the Clemson baseball program has emerged as a competitor. Now, with Raines departure from the program and reassignment tc administrative duties, McGee has some pressing items on his agenda. The first is to bring in a new coach quickly. McGee is already in the process Back in the glory days . ?1IP I W-JL- * Ilium Bi LORRIE MORGAN Greater Need BNA desalt* ? t * ^ Dutc Colui Visa, Mastt oach Raine and he is worried about how I prospective coaches will look at the program and what I caliber of coach can be brought in with the present facilities and fai base. "I want to know how other peopl look at us. That tells you something, alsc about maybe the things you need t address," McGee said. McGee then needs to give th program a complete overhaul that woul lure the high caliber type of candidat McGee wants to hire as the new baseba coach. The whole conference has just gon through a change in facilities. There' been a whole kind of wave of facilit improvements, and we need to be a par of that. When itfs all said and done, we' be part of that wave of improvements McGee said. McGee has not given names of possibl candidates, but he has offered an outlin 1 for a new coach. First of all, he wants a current hea 1 coach of an established college baseba i program. And he wants someone youn enough to coach at USC for at least 1 i years. i McGee added Raines will be consulte i throughout the search process.
