Wednesday, May 15,1996 Baseball tean College baseball at USC is over for th year, and, judging by the final record, mos people are saying Thank goodness." This year's pitching staff was horribl and had only one bona-fide successfi pitcher in Jason Haynie. Jason Poma _1 1 L.iL. 1 1 1 players like Mookie Wilson and Dav Hollins. Go T< Colonial Lift 772-1147 snowea some promise, dui ne naa a coupi of injuries and never was able to produc well this year. The offense had power though, as senica Marie Mapes and Brian Hucks were thei to provide a little pop in the bats as needec Hucks hit the now infamous "foul" homeru that would have given Carolina a muc needed victory over arch-rival Clemsoi Carolina never was able to get a bi string 01 victories going as mey struggle to defeat even the smaller schools in th early part of the season. Most of the struggling can be attribute to the fact the Gamecocks were young an inexperienced and the team lacked th talent needed on the mound to win a lc of big ball games. Now Athletics Director Mike McGe has a tough decision to make as he has t deride on whether or not to give June Raint another year to coach the baseball tean He has been there for many productiv seasons and has recruited some greg ii has down year e But on the I ACHIM I >t flip side he has HUNT struggled in I ;e recent years and il this year's team failed to even advance to it the conference tournament after being [e swept by Florida and Kentucky in the last ^ two conference series of the season, r ...;n ?? ? ? i Will nut unci ail upiinuii uii wiidi s Raines' fate may be because I have gotten e to know him this season and I really like L June as a person, but like all Gamecock n fans I have not been very pleased with the h recruiting and coaching of the baseball 1 players for a couple of years now for more g than one reason. ^ One reason is for the majority of Fairies' e tenure he has coached a team that was either and independent or a member of j the now defunct Metro Conference. The j players the team had this year would have e performed well in the Metro Conference, but the level of play in the SEC was way to much for this year's team. ,e Another reason is he seemed to all 0 always make some bad decisions in game s situations. When he lost half of his infield starters to injury it took several games of e experimentation to finally come up with it some sort of solution to the team's injury e problem. This period of experimenting cost the Gamecocks three or four games ^h vS^^I jSl m9B9RHSk ~i mi--- ~~~- 9HHg|ra9H^fl ^HLpg \ 1 -^H I i < ) Your E Ill CAROLINA ROOM \ \ 1 S' \ 6?? i ; i msi ma Ml m V4?? So the big decision for McGee is to go with experience or to decide if a change would give the Carolina baseball team a fresh start. I don;t know what McGee's decision will be, but I do know he will only do what is best for the University as a whole. uasKetoai! Would the basketball team have lost in the third round of the NIT this year if they would have had Kevin Garnett on the team? The smart money says they would have won some games in the Big Dance instead of playing in the Little Dance this year. Gamett was on his way to Columbia for college so what halted his journey to the Frank McGuire Arena? His high school grades were what kept the talented forward from USC. And that is what kept Jermaine O'Neal from coming here also. The scary thing is this trend has no end in sight. Who is the next big recruit that we will lose to academics and then the NBA?
