Monday, April 22,1996 Carolina sf ACHIM HUNT Asst. Sports Editor About eight months ago, I was a lost freshman who was barely able to find the Russell House much less the newsroom for The Gamecock. Well, now I know where both are all too well and it is time to reflect on my first year as a writer and assistant editor for The Gamecock sports section. My first memory of the year is a trip fn A a fn coo mw firof- TTQf ?r\/-\fholl w w ott xxxjr xxxoi xuubucux game as a student. We left Columbia early in the morning on what we were sure was going to be a happy trip that would result in victory. Nothing in the first half disparaged our dreams, but then Robert Edwards hit the running back position. He tallied five touchdowns in the second half, and the trash talking we did before the game made us leave town with our tails between our legs. Offense Good, Defense Bad The football team this year had a powerful onense lea by bteve l aneynili _ and Zola Davis. Against Louisiana Tech the Gamecocks scored 68 points, but allowed 21 to a hapless Tech offense. Then they played homecoming and allowed more points to Kent than we scored against Florida. The envelope, please! The ITK Gameball goes to an athlete who shows up for work eveiyday on time and plays to the best of his ability every game. It is none other than Cal Ripken, Jr. His efforts were much needed in a time when baseball was falling in popularity because of the labor disputes. He rescued the sport from only being a regional favorite much like NHL hockey is today. The ITK Goofball of the Year goes to a guy who let down all college football fans and, more importantly, his teammates this year. He is none other than Lawrence Phillips, the Nebraska running back who was charged with assault one week before the football season started. After serving a six game suspension for his actions, he was allowed to rejoin the national championship football team Then he cost himself about six spots in the NFL draft as he should have been the first player taken overall and was the sixth player taken overall instead. Folks, have a great summer, and if you are here, read The Gamecock sports for a wrap up on our trip to see the Chicago Cubs play. $ uUtiliuu *1* mli\ mi HHMl I BiiMBilMittMi Find K fi mmr num 19 I .'
