Also, This{ LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Homosexuality v For the past two semesters, I have wanted to writ on the ever-increasing .debate on the morality o immorality of homosexuality. It wasn't until I reai Carson Bush's editorial in the March 19 edition c The Gamecock that I felt the need to do so. Carson Bush stated, "I have spent the past fe^ years researching biblical traditions and teaching regarding homosexuality, and I can honestly say I d not find one place where the Bible condemns a loving monogamous union between two individuals of th same sex." Depending on what Bible Carson Bush researchet he may not have found any condemnation c homosexuality. Many newer translations seem t leave out some fundamental parts of the olde translations, but that is another issue. In the Kin James text, which is a widely used and accepted versio among many Christians, one can find condemnatio of this type of behavior. Leviticus 20:13 states, "IF man also lie with mankind, as he lie with a womai both of them have committed an abomination: the shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upo them." Romans 1:27 states, "And likewise also th men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burne in their lust toward one another; men with men wcridr that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselve that recompence of their error which was meet." this does not condemn sodomy, then I do not kno1 what does. Genesis chapter 19 also shows th condemnation and punishment of this sin. Mr. Bush also states that, "Essential to the fait of many Christians is that the church must alwa) be open to reformation by the call and guidance of th Holy Spirit." This may be true, but many Christiar also believe the Holy Bible, God's inspired words, ai the basis of all church doctrines and teachings an that the Bible is not open to "reformation." Finally, Mr. Bush writes, "...we will realize thj tolerance is not enough and that loving acceptance the true calling of Jesus." I would like to know whei he found this in the Bible. As Christians, we shou] not lovingly accept sin, but we must turn from it. The resolution stated, "historically, colleges and universities have been devoted to the resolution of differences of opinion by rational discourse and respectful tolerance... this ethos of peaceful resolution of hotly debated issues and emotionally charged disputes could well be eroded by the ready availability of firearms." It is the common sense language, such as this used by the Faculty Senate, that makes the argument against concealed weapons a viable Historical tarnish Gc It's a sad day when I I CI become the voice of SAl reason. It seems, judging ||^V7TT from the recent slew of columns and letters to the editor dealing with homosexuality, that many of you out there are waiting for some god directly out of the Old Testament to rear up and smite the wicked. Actually, to be fair, that statement is a bit too broad in its generality. There are those who aren't waiting for direct divine intervention but, nonetheless, believe God will help those who are counted among the faithftd and/or righteous. Historically, however, we can see that never seems to happen. Case in point. Where was God when the Nazis systematically exterminated more than nine million Jews, Gypsies, Poles, Homosexuals and political dissidents in the '30s and '40s? Beats me. Where was God when Stalin banished even more innocent human beings from this planet? Good question. My guess would be vacation. Where was God when Torquemada tortured and killed during that period known as the Spanish Inquisition? Or when the First, Second and Third Holy Roman PriisnHps wprp in fiill swincr? Thp only honest answer I can give is that I don't know. How can we be expected to enforce the laws dictated in the Bible when God is either too lazy or too apathetic to be bothered. All of these things were done by men in defense of the ideal of freedom, an ideal that is clearly defined in the Constitution. Whether or not God approves of homosexuality is a moot point. To be truthful, I think God does indeed condemn homosexuality. Since man was supposedly created in God's image, it stands to reason that God himself is a small-minded, racist homophobe. To use the Bible to defend intolerance is cowardly and lame. Using "because God said so" as a retort when asked why homosexuality is wrong is neither intelligent nor clever. If you're going to condemn gays, at least have the courage or your convictions to stand up and say, "Conformity is inherent in my nature. Gays are different, thus they frighten me, and that is why I hate them." I know it's hard to look bigotry in the face and see yourself, but put your faith in your God. i Of course, I could be completely wrong about God's apathy. After i all, Torquemada and the Crusaders were only doing his work. Maybe God really does work in i mysterious ways.
