Rite of sp This weekend's Garnet and White game displayed some of the new Gamecock talent. ACHIM HUNT Asst. Sports Editor Roughly 7,000 Gamecock faithfuls were able to officially overcome the depression of the NIT loss with the next big sporting event here at USC: Spring Football. The Gamecocks were able to get quality work in on Saturday as the firststring White team defeated the secondstring Garnet team 14-13. The deciding factor in the Garnet loss was the missed extra point of senior Reed Morton. The game was a virtual tie," Coach Brad Scott said after the game. "It is unfortunate that the final outcome was determined by a missed extra point, and yet at the same time, we need to look at our kicking game and evaluate where we need to improve in that area." Then the drive seemed to stall as on third down, senior defensive end Maynard Caldwell penetrated the line to sack Wright for a 16-yard loss. But senior running back Duce Staley shook off all of his recent off-the-field troubles and several defenders to reach the end zone en a 29-yard run that capped a 70-yard scoring drive for the White team. Steve Florio hit the extra point to give the White team an early 7-0 lead. "I am glad that all of my troubles are behind me, and now I can concentrate on football," an excited Staley said after the game. "It is good to get the touchdown, and it is a positive for me and the team. I am looking for a very positive year to come." Coach Brad Scott agreed wholeheartedly about his embattled senior. "Duce'is a fine young man, and I think he is totally committed to this team, and I am glad he had such a good game," Scott said. "They kind of lost P* me and left me wide open, and all I had to do was sprint to the end zone." The defense then flexed its muscle for the next quarter and a half as junior Florida transfer Darren Hambrick collected two sacks and was in Anthony Wright's hip pocket for seemingly every The Garnet defense was responsible for the next trig play as they forced Wright to scramble out of the pocket.
