USC fans need not fear, however. You wont have to wait for football and the fell to experience the thrill of victory. The winning spirit is still lingering in the spring air, and it seems to be especially thick around the spring sports complex. One can only hope that the fans' energy of basketball season will carry over into the spring. Unfortunately, many USC fans feel the need to take the spring off and wait around for the "revenue sports" to begin. For those of you who have chosen once again to stay away up to this point, here's what your missing: Carolina's baseball and softball teams have both jumped out to strong starts. The softball team boasts a 225 record and currently ranks eighth in the nation after defeating No. 1 Arizona and No. 5 California in last weekend's tournament at Fullerton, Calif The Lady Gamecocks have faced 10 nationally ranked opponents so far this season and have defeated seven of them. . Leading the way for the softball team is ace pitcher Trinity Johnson. The Ail-American was named Player of the Week by the National Softball Coaches Association for her performance in Fullerton, where she allowed only five earned runs and struck out 44 in ms offer fan this year. While the girls of summer are currently stealing the show, the boys of summer also are faring pretty well, especially for a team that many people doubted at the beginning of the season. The Gamecocks are 16-9 overall and are fighting for the top spot in the SEC East, despite suffering from subpar pitching, particularly in the relief department. Senior starting pitcher Jason Hayrrie and junior reliever Oliver Harwas are quite possibly the only two bright spots on the staff. Haynie is 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA and Harwas is 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA. The strength of the Gamecocks up to this point has been an explosive offense, one that has been especially potent against SEC opponents. Carolina has averaged 12 runs in nine SEC games and almost 13 per conference victory. Mississippi saw just how powerful the Gamecocks can be when Carolina scored 54 runs in a threegame sweep of the Rebels. The USC lineup is packed with offensive threats. Outfielders Etienne Hightower and Mark Mapes, firstbaseman Eric Stanton, shortstop Ryan Szwebjka and catcher Brian Hucks can all do damage with the bat. These hot hitters often provide the Gamecocks with leadership and an offensive spark. If the bats stay hot for Carolina and the rest of the pitching staff shows up, the preseason underdog will be a contender in the SEC. The diamond isn't the only place where winning is taking place, however. The men's and women's track teams have qualified 13 competitors for the NCAA Outdoor Championships (four men and nine women). Ail-American Dawn Ellerbe set an unofficial world record earlier in the season in the 20 lb. weight competition and also has qualified for the championships in the shot put and discus competition. A grand jury indicted Pittsburgh Steelers running back Byron "Bam" Morris on felony drug charges after authorities found marijuana and cocaine in his Mercedes-Benz. Morris was indicted on one count of possession of between 5 and 50 pounds of marijuana and one count of possession of between 1 and 4 grams of cocaine, Rockwall County District Attorney Galen Sumrow said. Both are third-degree felonies punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine. Authorities searching Morris' impounded car found 11/2 grams of cocaine Monday, Sumrow said. Hie leased car was retained Friday after officers found more than 6 pounds of marijuana in the trunk during a traffic stop. Morris, 24, and Rodney Dwayne Reynolds, 26, were arrested Friday and released after posting $25,000 bond. Irvin, former Cowboys tight end Alfredo Roberts, Angela Beck and Jasmine Nabwangu had been subpoenaed regarding the events that led to Beck's March 4 arrest on drug charges. The panel broke without taking action. Police said they found about 3 ounces of marijuana, 2 ounces of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. Arresting officers said the drugs were in Beck's immediate proximity and she told them the narcotics belonged to her.
