All my life, I have fought the good fight Battling from the trenches, on the rooftops and in the alleyways, I've taken my lumps valiantly, and I have home my scars with pride. But now Fm starting to wonder if this has all been in vain. By showing myself to my enemies, I feel IVe been giving them the advantage. It is time to change tactics. Pat Buchanan is the enemy, pure and simple. He worked loyally for the Nixon Administration, which was the closest thing America has ever had to a fascist regime. That fact alone should send the American public into a blind panic, but for some reason it hasnt. So I have decided to go to ground. Fm going to cut my hair to a respectable length and trade in my blue jeans and T-shirts for a closet full of somber three-piece suits and a rack full of power ties. Then Tm going to surrender my identity and join the Young Republicans. And let's face it, the best place to get a complete list of those groups and their phone numbers is the Buchanan Headquarters. I have to admit though, it is dirty work. Just imagining talking to all those people makes me feel like I need a shower. Second, rally every hate-monger in the US of A behind him in a very public fashion shortly before the election. This should, in theory, accomplish three things: One, bring every liberal and disenchanted potential voter stampeding to the polls in an effort to squelch Buchanan. Two, ensure that no Republican wins the presidency. And three, cause Buchanan to withdraw from public life for good and eventually die a broken man much like Sen. Joseph McCarthy did after he was finally censored by the Senate in the 1950s. In practice, however, it will be much more complicated and require impeccable timing, a cool head and nerves of steel. I'm not talking about a weight loss gimmick, a new fitness routine or even 12 easy steps to cure your drinking problem. I'm talking about Recycle 2000: USC's Campuswide Recycling Program. I know you've seen the blue bins in your building, the big green trailers scattered across campus and maybe even the new automated green stepvan driving around. Well, all that equipment is here on campus for a reason...to help stop us from throwing it all away! You may not know this, but the University of South Carolina generates a staggering $6 million pounds of garbage each year. To get rid of it, we must spend $200,000 of taxpayer money to have it hauled away and put in a landfill. Folks, almost 70 percent of what we are paying to bury in a landfill is recyclable! Believe it or not, almost 40 percent is simply office paper. What does that mean? It means it is time for you to realize that recyclable wnAv+o ano WOT (mah anvmnrp TVv are reusable commodities that companies BUY from us. Companies have the technology to turn recyclables back into new usable products. It means if you are still ascribing to that outdated habit of throwing away your notebook and office paper, computer paper, newspapers, aluminum cans and cardboard, you are wasting precious Buchanan sei Over the past few weeks, the American public has been bombarded with the opinions, claims and promises of the campaigns for the Republican nomination. Pat Buchanan has been on the forefront of the campaign, calling for America to wake up and realize it is in moral decay. I must wholeheartedly agree with Buchanan However, I think the direction in which he wishes to lead us is incorrect, and extremely dangerous. Pat Buchanan has merely stirred up the issue, and I will not honor him by discussing his bigoted claims, which sounded better in the original German. Recently, a column by Armstrong Williams appeared on the opinion page of The State newspaper urging America to tolerate homosexuals but not to accept them. Williams claimed ? * ? i . J "homosexual extremists nave misieu many to believe that a failure to not only tolerate, but support, the homosexual lifestyle is reprehensible bigotry." Later he claims that "every day our children are shown images that portray the homosexual lifestyle as normal and natural," and that "homosexuality is not normal." He added, "with this country's moral fabric eroding at an unprecedented pace, it is high time for a reality check." I agree, Mr. Williams. Please check your reality, because it is self-centered and does not show the reality of life today. In today's society, we are seeing an environment emerge that is accepting of people, despite their sexual orientation. But this is only the dawn, and the environment is far from fruition. Homosexuals are still being kicked out of the military if their sexuality is found out, regardless of their record. Alas, Mr. Williams begins to recreate the archaic tapestry of American morality. He claims "morality comes from God and God alone," and I agree. But it is clear the definition of God's morality differs among God's people. I have spent the past few years researching the Biblical traditions and teachings regarding homosexuality, and I can honestly say 1 do not find one place where the Bible condemns a loving, monogamous union between two individuals of the same sex. Even further, my understanding of the capabilities of human love command us to follow our hearts desire to love someone with everything we are. The feet is that if you are gay, your strcngesl love will be for someone of the same sex. Anything else will fall short oi one's true ability. God is the source of all morality, anc in the Christian tradition, Jesus is the herald of that morality. The ethica teachings of Jesus are among the mos comprehensive ethical instruction! ever given. He often directly state! university a lot of money. To explain this monetary argument, allow me to go through a quick lesson in economics. One ton of garbage costs us roughly $15 to have hauled away and another $25 to have landfilled (tipping fee). If we recycled that ton, we would not have to pay that $40 to give it to them (assuming it was paper, cardboard, etc.). Calculating the expenses avoided plus the revenue generated yields recycling an $80 per ton net positive value. It definitely makes economic sense! More importantly (in my biased opinion), recycling makes environmental sense. People need to wake up and realize there are 5.6 billion humans on this planet that depend on the Earth's natural resources for survival. A healthy planet gives us clean air, clean water, an abundant tood supply, and materials to build tools, toys and ,a home. As the population increases, we need to become more efficient with our resource use. Recycling helps us do that. Here's a little known fact: paper can be recycled into new paper seven times. If you throw paper away, you are wasting 85 percent of the tree they cut down to make that paper. That means ads wrong m< throwing out I CARSON their children, BUSH claiming they RjTflTTHWHI are dead instead of loving them for who they really are. One in three suicides is over issues of sexuality, and the family that turns their backs on their gay child runs the risk of losing him or her to death. If these are the proper values of family and society, I want nothing to do with them. Mr. Williams then uses the argument that "homosexuality is not normal." Homosexuality is not normal if you are not a homosexual, just like heterosexuality is not normal if you are not heterosexual. Last year, with the participation of many dedicated and enlightened recyclers, USC recycled 265 tons of what many used to call trash. This year, with more people pitching in, we will recycle 400 tons. If only the nonrecyclers would wise up and get with the program, USC could recycle more than 700 tons! That would be 25 percent reduction to our garbage glut Not bad for a little ol' school in our nation's Southland? All its gonna take is a simple change of perception and habit. Instead ol thinking of everything as trash, try thinking of everything as recyclable (after all, better than 70 percent is). If you can't find a place to recycle it only then do your result to trashing it. We need more people to grasp thie simple concept. If you see someone trashing a soda can or newspaper tell them "STOP throwing it all awaj - you really should recycle them!" Onl] then might they, too, get with the program. In a school of 27,000, it is scary to think that it's this hard to break tradition and go where your heart leads you, not where you skin color lets you in/Ihis seems to be happening, and the only thing holding it together is unspoken law. Why is it scary? At USC, the opportunity to put yourself in diverse situations is easier than in a world of 4.6 billion people. When you challenge a tradition, it makes a difference. Out there, who cares? Maybe it doesn't seem like such a big deal because those involved choose to act the way they do. No one has really caused a stink and, unless someone steps up and challenges the old system, no one will. For one thing, it lessens the effect of all the good that has crane from the events of the past. From an optimistic point of view, people are learning from other people. Fraternities and sororities, as well as most other organizations, are incorporating the best ideas from other groups into their programs. But complacency isn't the goal. We shouldn't be satisfied until a Christian can feel comfortable walking into a Hillel meeting because they simply want to broaden their scope of the world. State and North Carolina. After many years and over 100 articles as a Gannet journalist myself, S get a sniff. There aren't many jobs out 0 there for sports writers. There are tons of jobs for local news and local feature writers.
