Long street Theatre, on the corner of Greene and * Sumter streets, is undergoing one such face lift. It is part of the university's master plan of structural improvements in preparation for USCs 2001 bicentennial The building has an interesting past. It predates the Civil War and was used as a field hospital in the conflict, according to Pete Stiehr, project manager of the Long street renovation. The repairs will help preserve the building's tradition. "We want to keep [Long street Theatre] historically accurate while using modem construction imnrovernpnts " said Sanders Tate, the contracted architect for the renovations. The plans will improve the building's face. The cheek walls on the sides of the stairs will get a new cover of polymer concrete and stucco after some rebricking. "The bricks falling off the east cheek wall was unexpected," said Dean Reuter, of Assurance Waterproofing and foreman for the job. Two granite copings will top the cheek walls, which L are steeped slightly for runoff, protecting the stucco from water damage that caused cracks before. C The rest of the stucco walls on the building will be cleaned. m Additional directional lighting and pole lighting w along the side will showcase the improvements made to the face's metal work and wood molding around the it top., '!
