8 Gamecock! Davis, McKle pace Carotin as squad Improves to 13-1 a Frank McQuire Arena. MATT PRUITT Sports Editor The men's basketball team improve their home record to 13-1 Wednesda with a 80-75 victory over Florida. Th combination of the home victory an Vanderbilf s loss to Georgia places US' in sole possession of second place in th SEC East. i The Gamecocks were led on offens by guards BJ McKie and Larry Davi with 19 points each. McKie sparke Carolina with 12 first-half points and 1 3 shooting from being the arc. Davii who took only two shots and scored on! three points in the first half, stepped u in the second half, scoring 16 points o 10 field-goal attempts. Aggressive man-to-man defense b both teams led to limited offense in th first half as Carolina went to the lockc room up 34-30. Head coach Eddie Fogh deemed Florida's man-to-man secon only to Carolina's next opponen Mississippi. That was a pretty physical gan out there," Fogler said. That was aboi as physical a Florida defense as I'\ seen." "Florida always comes to play real physically, and that's why they're s tough," senior forward Malik Russe said. "Their big men post hard all da; they're guarding, they're holding, they'] grabbing, and it's just a tough gam They make it ugly:" Though Florida's harassing defenj was an obstacle for Carolina throughoi the game, the Gamecocks were able pick up the offense in the second ha Russell and center Ryan Stack gay strong performances down low. Russc finished with 14 points and 11 rebound while Stack contributed 10 points in j minutes. "I thought the big guys did a go< job tonight," Fogler said. "They we: pretty physical in there, and that's tl one area we have depth. If there's goii to be an attrition by fouls or a war insii thaf s one area we don't get hurt." Carolina took the lead at the 15:! mark of the first half with a Larry Da1* layup and would not lose it. ' Fogler also noted that winninj ' the road seems to have been difficul every SEC east team this year with exception of No. 2 Kentucky. Caro has two road wins; Georgia, Flor re Tennessee and Vanderbilt have e have one. y "I attribute it to the fact that r collie teams are fragile. Therefore, go on the road and that usually sh y> up.
