These numbers do not includi students who went to private physician or health clinics off campus for treatment While most students realize the threa HIV/AIDS poses to their sexual health many are not familiar with the threat; other STDs pose. Sexually active student; should be concerned about HIV/AIDS since it is the leading cause of death foi both men and women ages 25-44 However, students should become familial with the lesser-known STDs, since the] are far more likely to be infected wit! one or more of them dining their years at USC. In addition, students shoulc be aware that other STDs, especially those that cause sores or lesions, car serve as open pathways for HIV infection The three most common STDs amon| USC students: 1. Venereal Warts (HPV): The majority of STD visits made to Thomson Studern neaitn uenter are tor tne treatment o venereal warts, caused by a virus knowr as human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus causes warts to grow or the genitals. Similar to warts occurring on other sites on the body, they art painless growths. Some are flat, while others have the characteristic "cauliflower' appearance. In 40 to 50 percent of people infected the warts clear up by themselves However, some cases continue to get worse until treated. A person remains contagious while the warts are present, and possibly for a long time after treatment. Venereal warts have VOTE! In women, certain strains of the virus can cause cellular changes on the r cervix, which predisposes them to cervical cancer. In these cases, a woman may r not necessarily have visible warts, but f when she goes for her routine i gynecological exam, results from a Pap 3 Smear may indicate a precancerous 1 condition. An estimated 90% of all cervical j cancers are attributed to HFV infection. i 2. Chlamydia: This is still considered the most common STD in the United y States, with 3-5 million new cases per year. Approximately one-third of all STD diagnoses at the health center are j chlamydia. t Symptoms in men are pain and f burning during urination, and sometimes i a discharge from the penis. In women, the symptoms may be pain, burning I uuiuig uiuiuuuii oiiu iicavjr, luui-siiieimig vaginal discharge. However, 7 to 21 percent of men and 25 to 65 percent of women may not have any symptoms. ' As a result, the disease is often spread unknowingly to sex partners. , If untreated, chlamydia can threaten the health of both men and women. In ; men, the infection can spread to the i prostate and epididymis, where sperm , are stored in the testes. PID is the No. 1 cause of infertility in America today. Chlamydia is easily treatable using antibiotics. 3. Herpes: The third most prevalent STD on this campus is herpes. Genital herpes is caused by a virus that produces painful blisters at the site of infection. The blisters generally heal and disappear in a few weeks, but the virus remains in the body indefinitely and may cause periodic recurrences. Flare-ups are frequently caused by stress and fatigue. While a person is highly contagious during blister outbreaks, many people are unaware an infected person can also transmit the virus to a partner when blisters are absent. Some people have no symptoms, so they may not realize they are infected. This underscores the importance of condom use. There is no cure for herpes. Once infected, a person will remain infected and potentially contagious for life. There is, however, a treatment that makes the blisters less severe and the recurrences less frequent. The treatment costs $100$150 a month and must be continued for long periods of time to be effective. There is not one laboratory test that can be done to guarantee you are free from STDs. However, some tests are available for individual diseases. Two STDs, HIV and syphilis, may be detected through a blood test. Other STDs, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, may be detected by analyzing a culture from a woman's vagina and cervix or a man's urethra. These tests are not 100% reliable. The exception is HPV in women, but only after they have already exhibited cancerous changes on a Pap Smear. Any student concerned about possible STD exposure should consult a medical practitioner for further advice. Other STDs, such as gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV, occur on college campuses, including USC, but less frequently than other diseases. Anyone who places him- or herself at risk can contract STDs. Abstaining from sexual activity is the most effective STD prevention strategy. However, for anyone who chooses to be sexually active, correctly using a latex condom from start to finish with each act of intercourse is xl 1 x i x* ' . i orrrrv me Desi protection against oi us. When purchasing condoms, students should look for the word "latex" on the package. Latex condoms are available in different color, shape and size preferences, all of which are effective. While animal membrane condoms are effective in preventing pregnancy because sperm are too large to pass through the pores, they will not protect against HIV and other STDs. Most condom breakage is due to incorrect usage rather than poor quality. Common reasons for breakage include tears from teeth or fingernails, use of oil-based lubricants or old condoms, exposure to heat, reuse, air left in the tip or unrolling of the condom before it is put on. It is important for anyone who is sexually active to learn how use condoms correctly. Combine 1 Tbsp. melted jelly with wbipped cream cheese in a small bowl. Just before serving, stir remaining jelly into prepared fruit. Spoon fruit into center of meringue. Provided by Connie Welcb, R.D., for Cerenex Pharmaceuticals Chocolate Chip Cookies 1/2 C pitted dates 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1/3 C granulated sugar 1C all-purpose flour dash of salt non-fat cooking spray 1/2 C water 1/3 C brown sugar, packed 1 egg white 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 C chocolate chips Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit Combine dates and water in sauce pan and simmer for about 10 minutes; drain. In a food processor, puree dates and vanilla. Spoon date puree into mixing bowl and blend in sugars with an electric mixer. Add egg white and blend. In a separate mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Thoroughly mix wet and diy ingredients together by hand. Stir in chocolate chips. Chill dough in refrigerator for 10 minutes. Drop dough, by teaspoonfuls, onto cookie sheets coated with cooking spray.
