For example, an older actor portraying
a company chairman was shown
preparing to give a speech to stockholders
in a commercial for Cooper & Lybrand
in 1993. Lee Iacocca, former chairman
of Chiysler, made a pitch for automobiles
in 1990. Another 1990 commercial
featured an older male New York Life
insurance agent and his longtime
customer chatting about the importance

portrayed as a loving grandmother, there
is a good chance she will be the comic
relief in a Super Bowl commercial,"
Drewniany said.
In a 1995 spot for Lee jeans, a
department store floor vibrates as an
older woman is testing a mattress. She
squeals with delight, "Ooohhh, well take
it." Drewniany said it was a funny line,
but it wouldn't be funny if it starred a
younger man or woman.
African Americans don't fare any
better than women, according to research.
Drewniany found that, when featured
in commercials, African Americans most
likely were shown as athletes and
musicians instead of business
professionals.

Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan and Shaquille
O'Neal seem to dominate the airwaves.
Singer Ray Charles was a fixture for
three years, singing with his Uh Huh'
girls in Diet Pepsi.
