Call 252-7 Soon yov Have you used Microsoft word lately.' How about WordPerfect? Have you noticed how much hard disk and RAM space they take up? Have you noticed how many floppy disks they come on? Word and WordPerfect are prime examples of a disturbing trend in computing- the creation of gargantuan software that does everything under the sun. For instance, I firmly believe you could fire a nuclear weapon with Microsoft Word, provided you knew the appropriate key combination. Like many programs that have gone through multiple revisions, Word and WordPerfect pick up new features and new bells and whistles each year. The answer is C. Polka. This probably won't be a future SAT question, but if s the clearest analogy that can be made with the Texas sextet. Brave Combo doesn't just play polka music, they live, breathe and are polka music. They hide behind no musical masks and make no pretenses about what they do. They are the past, present and future of polka. Brave Combo's 1995 album "Polka for a Gloomy World" is nominated for a Grammy, and the band will play Rockafellas' tonight. The Grammy nomination has been 15 years in the waiting. The band formed in 1979 when disco and new wave were the newest-latest in musical hipness. Pink Floyd released "The Wall," Ace was still in Kiss and the kids from Silverchair were just coming into the world. All the while the Texans were playing their polka. In its decade and a half) Brave Combo has done many musical projects besides releasing CDs. They provided music for i the movie "True Stories" and the short lived Fox show "Bakersfield PD.," which te your co actually an extension of older concepts. World-wide web browsers have long used i separate helper applications to play sound and movies as a way to keep the main browser from becoming too clunky, i The newest version of Netscape Navigator is supporting the use of plug-ins, small pieces of software that allow Netscape to perform custom tasks. One effort gaining a lot of attention is called OpenDoc. OpenDoc is sponsored by Component Integration Laboratories, an independent, non-profit association whose members include Adobe, Apple, IBM, Lotus and Novell. Apple is developing OpenDoc for the Macintosh, Novell is for Windows and IBM is for OS/2 and ADC With OpenDoc-enabled software, Not long ago, Chris was down to 40 lb Today, after three years of chemotherap leukemia continues to stay in remissiot Chris loves heme able to feel good mos the time. Brave Combo also did music for the 1994 Olympic performances of two U.S. ice dancers. The band marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade under Woody Woodpecker, who is second only to Underdog in terms of coolness. Brave Combo is like C3PO in their multi-linguistics. They can speak, or at least sing, in 25 languages. They play polka songs from Russia, Poland and Germany with their own original songs from their Texas-Mexico borderland. Brave Combo is essentially a party band with more of a mission and purpose than old Meat Puppets' albums. The band hopes to dispel people's ideas that musical coolness is spoon-fed by MTV and pop radio. With a Grammy nomination in the polka category, their mission may indeed reach the masses. Brave Combo is an alternative to Alternative, playing types of music that obviously had a great effect on Rancid and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Instead of watching another mediocre episode of "Friends," Brave Combo will be waiting to put the Rockafellas' crowd into a polka dancing frenzy. Who knows. If Brave Combo does win the Grammy, you can say, "I knew them before they were big." <1 'llipUiVl u users will be able to mix and match software parts as building blocks to fit a their needs, combining text, graphics, C video, spreadsheets and other types of c data into a single document. 1: This document-centered point of view is different from traditional computing f methods where a file belongs to an t application, such as WordPerfect Under a OpenDoc, a document will be more of its I own entity, with OpenDoc parts working c together to create it. rm i ji i _ JL_ _ _ijn *j i ne tecnnoiogy is sou in its iniancy, 1 and it has a lot to prove before it will I become a part of mainstream business I and educational computing.
