Thursday, January 18,1996 Experience li MATT PRUm Sports Editor Eddie Fogler has said from Day One that he would have to look to his more experienced players if USC was going to win basketball games this season. Look no further. The Carolina upperclassmen exploded Wednesday to give their team an 87-83 win over Vanderbilt in overtime. Junior guard Larry Davis, who came off the bench, led all scorers with 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds; he was followed closely by his classmate, center IN ate wiiDourne, wno naa 21 points ana eight boards. Senior forward Malik Russell also played a crucial role in the win with his 18 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Fogler praised Russell after the game for his hustle, saying he "played his fanny off," as well as his new understanding of his role on the team. Though the elder Gamecocks stole the show Wednesday, sophomore Melvin Watson also showed poise in the victory, pouring in 17 points and providing a spark for an initially sleepy Carolina offense, even though he was forced to leave the game temporarily with an injury near the middle of the second half. Despite the stellar performances from the core members of the USC team, the victory did not come easily. The Gamecocks were plagued by defensive breakdowns in the first half that led to easy Commodore baskets. The team's 11 first-half turnovers, caused larpelv hv Vanderbilt's tenacious half-court trap, provided them with opportunities for transition points. Carolina went into halftime down 30-39. Unlike in Saturday's game against Florida, however, the Gamecocks' did not stay down once they were there. They staged a 14-7 run early in the second half, starting at the 18:42 mark. Carolina used that momentum to take the lead at the 11:48 mark for the first time since early in the first half. A few minutes later, an uncharacteristic mental error by Fogler shifted the tides in Vanderbilt's favor. A technical foul was called against Carolina at the 8:21 mark for having six men on the court. In overtime, the two teams matched each other basket for basket until the :24 second mark, when the Gamecocks took the lead for good. Fogler characteristically downplayed the importance of the win but did express happiness with his team's comeback. Tm pleased that we responded and came back from a negative situation," Fogler said. Tm proud of our team's effort in the second half." Fogler's halftime speech was the impetus for the performance of his upperclassman. on 1- 1.-1 J TtiT_l_ J T I v^oaui ioiu us, ivieivui anu i, we nave to come out here and win. We can't lose at home," Russell said, adding that Fogler advised them to attack the troublesome Commodore trap, a piece of advice that led to improved offensive production in the second half. "We're going to be down," Russell said. "We have to be able to continually fight back." Larry Davis added that veteran leadership is important in coming trom behind. "Every team that's good has a veteran player," Davis said. "When the veteran players step up, that team wins the game." "Me and Malik talked about stepping up in the second half and not letting teams control us in the second half.... We have to put 40 minutes together." Vandy head coach Jan van Breda Kolff attributed the loss to losing three players to foul-outs, Carolina's aggressiveness on ? the offensive boards, which led to several jU] second opportunities, and the acquisition g3 of experienced personnel since last vear. \RD J^j~] ollege Seniors c t cm vice Oriented Activities dee to Mortar Board i of the 1996 Spring Semester iber 1996 & 1997 nulative GPA of 3.0 or better Information Desk on the use or in the Campus West Wing of the Russell by Friday, February 9, ation Call 544-0495. _ HfWfiiP GS QUARTERLY iring Editoi 3arnet & Black Quarterly student magazine equires that applicants be junior or senior s overall or minimum GPR required to remai ichever is greater), and must have worked 1 ie year (or equivalent experience). "We discussed many things, including a contract extension for Wayne, but there is no timetable as to when such an extension may be completed," Kings general manager Sam McMaster said.
