Carolina-Clemson weekend is
the highlight of the year for mpst,
with parties running about as
rampant as Raymond Priester and
Emory Smith did on that sunny
Saturday afternoon.
Like many students here at South
Carolina, I parked in the bastion of
tailgate-dom known as Talley-Ho's
before the game; however, unlike
many of the students, I attended the
game-sober. I figured that a loss
for the Gamecocks would be enough
without a headache.
After the game (a 38-17 Tiger
victory), I meandered back to TalleyHo's,
reflecting on the game and just
how many Clemson fans would be
in Rve Points later that night gloating
their hard-earned victory.
Upon entering the parking lot,
it was immediately brought to my
attention that about half of the people
that came didn't attend the game at
all because of: 1) lack of tickets; 2)
severe intoxication; 3) unconsciousness
due to severe intoxication; or, my
favorite 4) oblivious to the game due
to severe intoxication.

hadn't Those who had were hoarse,
their buzz was markedly decreased,
and they were badly in search of
more alcohol. The ones who hadn't
were dirty, couldn't see straight and
were baldly in search of more alcohol.
After finding my friends, we all
meandered to the vicinity of the
fraternity tents, where it seemed
like a high school reunion, with just
about every one from my old high
school in Charleston congregating
in one spot.
Then, as if this was surprising,
a fight broke out under one of the
tents. One of my friends, who had
his share of alcohol as well, jumped
on the two to, I assume, try to break
up the fight.
After one or two people jumped
on my friend, I figured that I, the
sober and right-minded one, would
intervene to try to break up the fight.

For that, I wasn't awarded a
million dollars, but I was almost
granted a black eye for my peacekeeping
efforts. A pretty nice uppercut
from one of them missed me by a
hair. One of the guys, who I had just
taken to be "brothers" from some
fraternity, said, "You better get outta
here, you GDI. You're outnumbered
here, bov."
Well, it took me, a while to realize
that the brother was speaking to me,
because it seemed that he was talking
to someone behind me. Then I
remembered that with complete
obliteration comes impaired vision.
As I walked away, giggling at
the ineptitude of these esteemed
fraternity brethren, I asked one of
my friends what the hell the meaning
of a "GDI" was. He told me that the
acronym was meant for all nonfratemity
brothers, who are labeled
"God Damn Independents."
Sorry, guys. I guess I was
misinformed when I came to this
university. I guess trying to obtain
an intellectual education in college
is not meant to be. And finally, I
guess that I should try to change my
independent thinking to group
thinking.
Sorry, guys. You didn't know me,
so I guess I should've left. Even
though I wasn't even under your
holy tent, you didn't know me, and
that's a sin. I do hope you forgive
me for my independent wrongdoings.

concepts, but I am not one to say
that the aforementioned behavior
is representative of Greek life as a
whole because I have never been a
brother. I do have a few good friends
in fraternities who are not as
ignorantly gung-ho about it as many
others are. They take it in stride,
which is the way it should be. But
for those who are representative of
the obnoxious freaks who "didn't
know" me, maybe you could use a
lesson from one of those GDI's on
independence before you leave school.

out, should be evident. If the man
moves from trying to cajole the woman
into sexual activity to forcing her to
comply, he may encounter what seems
like little resistance. That's simply
because the woman's socialization process
has likely taught her not to express her
own desires openly, for fear of rejection
