Thursday, November 16,1995 Everythin Carolina sophomore pre- rg pares to rise to SEC upper echelon. 11 DWAYNE McLEMORE Staff Writer The USC men's basketball team I is hoping to improve this season, while II sophomore guard Melvin Watson is looking to make sure the Gamecocks j| do iust that. 1 Watson returns to the lineup af- | ter having a solid freshman campaign 1 in which he started every game. He led the team in scoring with 13.4 points if per game and was unanimously selected to the Freshman All-SEC team. In addition, The Sporting News , rated Watson as the 19th best point guard in the nation, with only three other freshmen or sophomores on the list. During the 1994-95 season, he |g lead all SEC freshmen in minutes per game, averaging 34.4. "The minutes were not a problem. I was so happy to be out there, I never thought about being tired," Watson said. Watson is no stranger to awards. He was Lowcountry Player of the Year his senior year at Burke High School \ in Charleston, S.C. He was also selected team MVP while attending The Winchendon School in Boston, Massachusetts. His decision to attend USC was based on a few simple reasons. He says he liked the good, clean program, and also wanted to stay close to his mother. Other schools Watson con- g sidered belore choosing UbC included Syracuse, Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and Alabama. After the loss of team captain Carey Rich following last season, the team M is counting on someone to pick up the re role of team leader. Many people, including coach Eddie Fogler, feel Wat- t son is one of the top candidates. v "Melvin has a chance to be a good s leader," Fogler said. "He does some physical things that his teammates F will respect." Watson feels that being around ? Rich has taught him a lot and has en- a abled him to be more vocal than in Pi Which tradition A.
