8 BHIHpGfiilir Sophomore Kristinn Larusson fight Iceland native scored a goal in the 1 Gamecock; Staff Reports Fifth-ranked South Carolina defeated No. 17 College of Charleston Sunday afternoon 5?0 in front of 1,795 at The Graveyard. The game saw Clint Mathis score two goals to pace the Gamecocks and set another school record in the process. Mathis scored his first goal of the game at 32:13 when he received a Tony Soto pass at the 18-yard box, dribbled left and fired a perfectly placed shot to the upper right corner. That goal was his 10th game-winning goal on the year, breaking former All-American Doug Allison's record of nine game-winning goals in a season set in 1985. Last year's SEC Tournament champion Vanderbilt, who received six first place votes with a total of 21 points, was chosen to finish first in the league. Smith, a native of Benfleet, England, led Carolina in SEC and overall scoring in its inaugural season. She had five points on two goals and one assist in SEC play and had 24 points on 10 goals and four assists overall. She netted game-winning goals against Charleston Southern and Wofford. The Gamecocks finished their inaugural regular season at 8-10-2 overall and 0-7-1 in the SEC. Women's Tennis Lady Gamecocks, Tracy Kotseos and Sophie Ljucovic, wrapped their play at the Rolex Regional Championship on Saturday as they were unable to advance any further in the doubles draw. The women, who made it to the quarterfinals with a win on Friday, just missed a spot in the semifinal as they fell to the No. 2 seed Zifer and Fix of Duke 8-5. The tournament was the last action for the Lady Gamecocks this fall. Men's Swimming and Diving The South Carolina men's swimming and diving team fell to Ohio State and Kentucky at Lexington. Ky. Ohio State defeated the Gamecocks 75-36, while SEC for Kentucky downed Carolina 68-43 South Carolina falls to 22 on the year, 0-1 in the SEC. Freshman Jimmy Cho was Carolina's only individual winner as he edged teammate Chirstian Robinson in the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 1:52.81. Robinson came home in 1:53.29. Freshman Jay McGarity finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:39.31. McGarity also finished third in the 1000 free South Carolina's next action comes against nationally ranked Tennessee at 4 p. m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Carolina Natatorium.
