back the Game of the Week on Saturdays.
Patterned after the NFL's TV deal,
it will involve at least two broadcast
networks, almost certainly Fox and
probably either CBS or ABC, as well
as a cable partner for some regularseason
and playoff games.
NEW YORK ?National ratings
for the baseball playoffs are up 4 percent
over two years ago.
The first five games averaged a
12.8 rating and a 22 share, Nielsen
Media Research said. In 1993, the
six prime-time games during the comparable
period averaged a 12.3 rating
and a 21 share.
SEATTLE ? Gov. Mike Lowry
signed a $325 million plan to build a
new ballpark for the Seattle Mariners.
The proposal, put together in an
emergency legislative session last
week, combines state revenue with
still-to-be-approved King County tax
increases and $45 million from the
Mariners.
The Mariners are to be put up for
sale Oct. 30 without the promise of
a new stadium.

HOCKEY
TORONTO ? Tie Domi of the
Toronto Maple Leafs was suspended
for eight games and fined $1,000
by the NHL for punching Ulf Samuelsson
in the face, a blow that left the
New York Rangers defenseman with
a concussion.
Domi's suspension includes Toronto's
Oct. 29 game at New York, the
only other time this season the
Rangers play the Maple Leafs. He is
eligible to return Nov. 3 at Vancouver.

Bills coach Marv Levy was listed
in good condition at Roswell Park
Cancer Institute following surgery
to remove his prostate.
Doctors have told Levy, 70, in his
ninth year with rsunaio, tnat tne cancer
was discovered at an early stage.
Levy is expected to stay in the hospital
about a week, and hopes to rejoin
the Bills on Nov. 12 for their game
against Atlanta.

BERLIN ? Steffi Grafs lawyer
criticized the General Motors subsidiary
Opel for ending a sponsorship
deal with the tennis star, and said
Opel had acted on rumors rather than
hard fact.
Grafs father, Peter, has been under
investigative arrest without bail
since early August, accused of failing
to report some $35.3 million of her
income.
Though Graf herself has been
questioned twice in the case, she does
not face immediate arrest and is playing
this week in Britain in the
Brighton tournament.

For the third time in a row and
sixth time in nine years, South Carolina's
men's soccer team has captured
the MetLife Soccer Classic
Tournament title.
On Saturday, USC defeated the
University of New Hampshire 3-1
behind sophomore Kristinn Larusson's
two goals. Also scoring for the
Gamecocks was Chuck Prosser. USC
outshot the Wildcats 22-4.
In the championship match, the
No. 7 Gamecocks were pitted against
the No. 6 St. Louis Billikens. USC
won the shootout 4-3 with sophomore
Clint Mathis scoring three goals. Senior
defender Billy Cliccord scored
the other goal for USC. Junior goalkeeper
John Mills made six saves in
the victory. New Hampshire defeated
Davidson in the first game of the day,
2-1, to take third place in the tournament.
Tony Soto, Clifford, Larusson and
Mathis were named to the All-Tournament
Team with Mathis winning
Offensive MVP.
USC now has a 16-1-1 record at
the MetLife Soccer Classic held annually
at The Graveyard and a 194-3
record in MetLife Classic tournaments
across the country.
Carolina will take a week off before
heading to Saint Louis to participate
in the UMBRO Tournament on Friday
and Sunday. On Friday, USC
will face No. 13 SMU at 6:00 p.m
and on Sunday USC will play Alabama
Birmingham at 1:30 p.m.
