It is less likely that one would consider such stand-out athletes as Shannon Johnson, Heather Greene, or Cary Beeson. Even though it is clear that a bias remains to consider men's athletics first, the times they are a chang- It "We've gotten a lot more respect," senior Defensive v$gj Specialist Caiy Beeson said H jr JrP|l|| ofthe volleyball team. "The program, more then ever, is really behind us now." The support for women's athletics from the top is clearly present now, much more than in the past. Athletics Director Mike McGee, Laurie Massa, and a host of other administrators have spent the last three years turning the women's athletics program around. "Mike McGee has been the architect of whafs gone on in this athletic department," volleyball head coach Kim Hudson said. "Mike may tell people what to do, but the attitudes have changed, ifs because those people believe." Right now, we'll take a look at each team and i the individual stars who help the team succeed to see just where USC's teams stand now, and where they might be in the fixture. Volleyball USC jumped from ninth to fourth place in the SEC last year and is taking a legitimate shot at the NCAA's this year for the first time since iy?4. Already this year, USC has been the only team in the country to take a game off No. 3 Florida, and the Gamecocks have moved up to fifth in the District 4 rankings. The team is currently 12-6,3-3 in the SEC. USC looks to improve its conference record this weekend with road games against Auburn and Alabama. One of the stars of this year's team in Senior Cary Beeson. Beeson has been named to the AllSEC Honor Roll for the past two years, leaving Hudson to call her "a highly motivated studentathlete that provides stability and positive leadership." Beeson has also collected 4S3 digs in her first three years at Carolina. Beeson sees a bright future for the team, and has already been a witness to some of the positive changes. "It's gotten a lot more popular since I've been here," Beeson said. "We used to have 150 people come to a game. Now on a Friday night, we'll have 750 people here. Head coach Sue Kelly and Assistant Coaches Karrie Miller and Richard Rowell have guided the team to an impressive 6-6 start in it's first season. Although Carolina has yet to win its first SEC match, it has had to face the three best teams in the SEC (Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and LSU) in its first four SEC games. The Gamecocks, even though they play with no seniors, are anchored on both sides of the field with experienced and talented juniors. Tessa Kenerson and Debbie Smith play a gritty and explosive style up-front. Kenerson, a Columbia native, scored USCs first ever goal and winning goal against Furman in USCs first game ever. Debbie Smith is also an offensive power having scored a hat-trick earlier in the season. Happy Payne and Tanya Yavarow both play well in the back of the zone with their junior experience. As defenders with previous experience, Payne and Yavarow are critical to the Gamecock's chances for the rest of the season. The future of Carolina's team is wrapped up i. in it's star freshmen though. Already, several freshmen have showed up big for the Gamecocks this season. Outstanding forwards Lexi Tourtellotte and j Perry Moniuszko have each scored frequently during the season, with Moniuszko having scored i a hat-trick already this season. Freshman keeph er Amy Toms has been contributing outstanding play in goal so far this season with an extremely low goals-against average, and six shute outs recorded. The facilities, the coaches, and e * the players needed for success are being rapidly introduced to the USC and family, and things are looking up.
