Point Blank Hey sports fans! Now that the college and NFL football seasons have finally gotten underway, I can finally start getting back to what my point blank col umn started last year. For those of you not familiar with point blank, be warned, I might make fun of one of your favorite teams. Heisman hopefuls. At the beginning of the football season, I expected to have a good idea of who the Heisman candidates would be by this time of the year. Recently suspended Nebraska runningback Lawrence Phillips was my preseason pick, but now the field is wide open. Leeland McElroy probably has the inside track now, but Texas A&Ms schedule will hurt his chances. Florida State's Danny Kanell also has a strong chance to be named the nation's best player. The SEC has two possible candidates in Danny Wuerffel and Stephen Davis, while the Big Ten also has two of the top players in the nation, Michigan's Tim Biakabutuka, and Penn State's Bobby Engram. Well Holtz's Notre Dame Fighting I-Wish started the season by being upset by Northwestern, but they have shown uncharacteristic strength by pummeling Purdue and Vandy. Last week's Texas game proved that the I-Wish might have a decent team, but Ohio State should crush them in Columbus. Don't worry Lou, you still have all three service academies left on your schedule. Left my heart in Motown. For those of you 49er fans still left dumbfounded (DeButts) by 3-0 San Francisco's loss to the 0-3 Detroit Monday night, don't worry, there is still a lot of season left, and the 49ers are still one of the best teams in the NFL. If you remember last year they were beaten soundly by the Eagles 40-8 at Candlestick (3Com Park) and they won the Super Bowl. Carolina Athletics. This is a good weekend if you are a Gamecock fan because three teams have home games. There should be no excuse to miss the Gamecocks in action this weekend. The volleyball team is still searching for its first SEC win and has two chances this weekend. They host Arkansas Friday at 7 p.m., with LSU coming into town for a 2 p.m. Sunday match. Both matches will be held at Sol Blatt P. E. Center. The soccer squad will face in-state opponent Presbyterian Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Graveyard. The Gamecocks beat the Blue Hose earlier this year in exhibition, but both teams have improved so it should be a good game. And for those of you that don't know yet, the football squad will face the No. 14 LSU Tigers at Williams-Brice. The Gamecocks are still searching for a SEC victory, but LSU has started the season strong, beating Auburn two weeks ago. The game will be televised on WIS in Columbia with a 12:30 start time. p * 1 j ^ I ?*{ ^ I 1 J ^^VLLLJULLLs ^BF J I H I * iiSS ? jgjM * JH ' HP H m i Hk jJB <4 The Gamecock SPORTS UM Associated Pres Baseball MADISON, Wis. ?
