Those were the days of dissecting frogs for the first time, school lunches and Sweet Valley High books. Yes, you just saw what you thought you saw: Sweet Valley High. Despite the fact that you thought this series of books fell off the copies, and one of its spin versity, has sold 133 copies since January. Kennedy said that these are good numbers for books of this nature. Similar series are R.L. Stine's "Fear Street" and "The Babysitter's Club." Because it has probably been a few years since you may have read a Sweet Valley High book, youH be surprised to see just how much the series' heroines, Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield (twins, remember), have grown. There's a Sweet Valley High television show and a fan club, which costs $6.25 a year to join. Yet, despite the expansion of Sweet Valley High in recent years, you can never really forget the good times you had with them in their early years. Really, can you ever forget Bruce Patman, Enid, Lila, Todd and Ka CiiizaDetn s oiaer teven, who went to college. Remember zabeth was in a mob accident or when dyed her hair black ?k on a French per? What about when anne Devlin came m New York to visit le Wakefields and ssica and Elizabeth waa tuways trying to scrounge up information for SVKs school paper, The Oracle. As bad of literature as Sweet Valley may look now, at the time they were good books. They were toned-down trash for adolescent girls to read. Jessica and Elizabeth and their entourage of followers tried to give us a glamorized view of high school: high school seemed a place where everyone drove red Fiat convertibles, had dates to dances and had a really cool twin sister. Too bad high school was full of late-model used cars, dateless proms and an older brother who didn't even talk to you in the hails. J o O Keanu Reeves starring in a post-World War II r love story? A far cry from his previous roles in \ "Speed" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure," Reeves' only experience with on-screen romance was a cheesy Paula Abdul music video he did a couple years back. Yet Reeves, with the help of an incredible supporting cast and a great director, made "A Walk in the Clouds" a charming, romantic tale worth seeing. The plot is relatively simple and is somewhat ( predictable. Reeves plays an American soldier, Paul Sutton, who is unhappy with his life after the war. After meeting a young, unmarried pregnant woman, ( Victoria, who is afraid to face her father with news ] of her pregnancy, he agrees to temporarily pose as 1 the woman's husband (although he is married). What the movie lacks in plot originally, it makes ip for with its cast. Reeves is almost lost among he great actors and actresses assembled for the aovie. Although his acting is not bad, it is defilitely not an award-winning performance. Staring opposite of Reeves is Aitana Sanchez-Gyon in ler American film debut. Sanchez-Gijon is renarkable as Victoria and overshadows Reeves' relttively average performance. The two, however, nanaged to create a classic, believable, pn-screen nuple. This chemistry is clearly visible in the grape rushing scene, a wonderfully sweet and humorous icene which really must be seen to be appreciated. Without the supporting cast for "A Walk in the "Honda " t.Vip movie would be considerablv less en ertaining. Anthony Quinn fills the role of Don PeIro, Victoria's grandfather. The two-time Academy Award-winner does a masterful job of portrayng an old wise man who accepts Sutton into the iamily. Giancarlo Giannini turns in a brilliant performance as Victoria's narrow-minded, tradition-bound father. His ranting and raving draws a direct contrast to the relaxed and laid back attitude of the older, wiser Don Pedro. The supporting cast adds a dimension beyond a simple love story. Through the intergeneratianal conflict that arises during the course of the film, this "simple love story not only depicts the romance between Sutton and Victoria, but also examines the love found within the family. Directing the film was Alfonso Arau, who also directed the international hit, "Like Water for Chocolate." Arau's attention to detail was clearly apparent in the amount of research necessary to recreate a lJMO's Napa Valley vineyard. The scenery is remarkably beautiful and the traditions and customs all appear to be authentic, giving the movie added credibility.
