6 OUT OF BOUNDS LARRY WILLIAMS Sports Editor Gamecocks 1 T T A tnreaten uoa tradition Tomorrow in Athens, Ga., the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Georgia Bulldogs will lay it all on the line for the 47th time in history. For three hours, both teams will scratch, kick and claw as much as they can to try to emerge the victor. You can bet that Sanford Stadium will be rockin', and it will be extremely difficult for USC to emerge from the game triumphant. The following will explain why a USC victory would be it's best yet in SEC play. First of all, for tradition's sake, we should discuss the series of these two teams, which hasn't been so competitive. The Bulldogs hold a 35-10-2 "edge" in the series. This can be misleading, however, because the two teams have been very competitive in the last decade, with Georgia holding a slight 5-4 advantage. Bulldog fans don't think that USC's program holds a candle to theirs, and it doesn't. UGA's program, from a tradition standpoint, is much better than Carolina's, but for Georgia fans to repeatedly write off tomorrow's game and insult USC on local talk shows is absurd. Hie game might be a lot of things, but it certainly won't be a blowout. To the dismay of some Georgia fans, we must recall the last time the Gamecocks ventured into Athens to take on the Bulldogs. Surely a heartbreaking 2321 last second loss should make Bulldog faithful wary. Well, the fens are fens, and the play ers are players, and it anything's tor sure, the Georgia football players are not looking past Carolina. They will be ready. Head coach Ray Gofi; as you all might already know, has been told by AD Vince Dooley that he must show "significant improvement" this season order to be kept on as head football coach. After tomorrow's game, Georgia travels the following week to battle the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. Common sense tells us that starting out 0-2 will mean bye-bye Goff. Despite what some people may say, Georgia's game against USC will be ten times more important than the Tennessee game. If the Dawgs beat Carolina, then the Tennessee game isn't monumental. But if they LOSE to the Gamecocks, then the game in Knoxville will be a must win. You DONT win too many games in Neyland Stadium, must win or not. The game against USC will be Georgia's biggest game of the season, whether they like it or not. South Carolina must be ready. The point lies here: After back-toback disappointing seasons, Georgia's players, fans, and coaches are victorystarved. They're used to 10-win seasons and bowl games, but haven't been to a bowl in two years. They're used to knowing they're going to win, but now they just hope. They want to win, and *' J- ^ TUJ fW, uiey want it nuw. una uicaua uiol uomgia has more pressure, more at stake, and needs to win this game much more than Carolina. The Gamecocks, from anyone with any common sense, aren't expected to go undefeated this year, and most fans are patient and realize that it will take a few years for prominence in the SEC. Georgia, on the other hand, is used to that prominence and is ready to return to the top of the SEC. One thing's for sure: the Georgia Bulldogs will be ready to lay everything on the line for a win tomorrow. They'll be fired up and ready to swing come game time; however, a window of opportunity exists for Carolina, one that can give Coach Brad Scott and company their first big-time SEC victory, one that can get them that much closer to where they want to be. How will they respond? Stay tuned. From.ctowntow Columbia to Athens. Ga.: Take HwyTCtfor- j merty i-126) west bound to 1-20. J Take 1-20 west to Augusta. Stay ! on 1-20 thK&gh Augusta.
