the definitive guide to coping with
college.
Titled, "The Ultimate College Survival
Giude," (Peterson's, Princeton, NJ),
the book examines every aspect of college
of life, including getting along with
professors, doing laundry, joining a sorority
or fraternity and living with a gay
roommate.
"We wrote the book because, when
my daughter was entering college, we
went to workshops for parents and those
parents kept asking the same questions
that paretns have bear asking about college
for years," Farrar said. "Because I
wrote the book with my daughter, who
graduated from college in 1985,1 think
it has the freshness of youth and the wisdom

universities for a while."
Although the book, which is already
in its second printing, is intended for college-bound
youths, it is a useful resource
for parents, particilarly for those who
did not attend college.
"Many of the parents haven't gone
to college, and they don't understand
some of the experiences their children

their children with better understanding.

ety of issues that young people will face
in college. Here are some helpful tips to
some common problems freshman face.
Essentials for studying:
A crnod dictionary A lot. of dictionar
ies out there have the name "Webster's"
attached to them. This doesn't necessarily
mean they're all equally good.
Some of them are better than others.
Read some sample entiries.
A thesaurus. An essential for those
times when your vocabulary fails you or
when you need writing inspiration.
One or two exceptionally well-written
papers from your high school days. You
can use the format for guidance in case
your skills have dulled a bit since you
last sat in a classroom.
| When it's not working out with
your roommate:
First, talk to your residence adviser.
RA. rooms are nearby, their doors are
open, and the counsel is free.
If your situation is truly intolerable,
don't give up. Be polite, but be persistent.
Camp out on the housing office's
doorstep until you get action. If all else
fails, find someone else who's willing to
share a room with you.
Making Friends and fitting in:
Be friendly. Make an effort, early on,
to get acquianted. This is an excellent
chance. Don't let this window of opportunity
dose while you hole up like a hermit
in your room, waiting forpeople to
drop in and introduce themselves.
