PATRICK POHERTYSenior Writer The Carolina Panthers, the Toronto Raptors, and the USC women's soccer team. What do these three have in common? You guessed it, they will be starting play for the first time this year, and with veiy young teams. The difference for the Lady Gamecocks? They will be starting off without the support of hundreds of thousands of screaming fans. Fan support is definitely something that the team wouldn't mind having though. "We're a fun team to watch," coach Sue Kelly said of her team. We've got a group of guys willing to put it on the line every game, and we want the students to come out and support us." Support aside, the soccer team is running through grueling three-a-days this week with their first game next Sat urday at ine Graveyard against Funnan. The team, even though it is very young (12 out of 19 are freshmen), is working hard to achieve some very makflhle goals. * "We have the talent to make it to the SEC Tournament this year," assistant coach Karrie ~ P E- ours i ?? The SEC Women's Soccer Tourney only takes the top six teams in the conference, making the consecutive home games against Eastern Division foes Florida and Georgia on October 11th and 13th very important for the team. Although filling out the starting positions with mostly freshmen might be a bit painful when competing against more experienced teams, it's still the most sensible way to build for a future team. "We have a pretty good talent base for the next few years," Coach Miller said, "We're about where we'd like to be in terms of our players, considering the time frame we're on." Signing players was an interesting task for the coaches this season; Head Coach Sue Kelly was hired only a week before the deadline for signing athletes. This gave the ad hoc coaching staff only a few months to go get players. "We used some alternative routes," Coach Kelly said, "We signed people straight up for Junior College and got a lot of transfers." Kelly is concerned about the win-loss success of her team, although she has other goals in mind for her club as well. r /? t Liitetime b< That's why ffl I Wed I For more informatio W)\x PLIES 540 m [ 4pm t ;r $25 6pm us k Thursday, August 24. 1995 ;r season i :jfl "A lesson in athletics is also a lesson in life," she said. 1 want them to leam that even if they get knocked down they can get right back up and achieve." Instilling mental toughness in this young team is a high priority for the coaching staff. A good mental attitude now will* pay big dividends in the future as the freshmen grow into their roles as senior leaders. Aside from the hard work and challenge of mental preparedness, there is also the fun ride of playing on a first-year | team. Freshman forward/midfielder Lexi Tourtellotte is exited about the firsts of playing on a new team. "People are going to say, Look at her. She set all the rules, jcored the first goal, got the first fellow card.' It's going to be a ^ ot of fun," she said Having fun vhile striving to achieve firstfear success is definitely a tough oalancing act, but players and caches alike were still able to imile after working out in the ain on Tuesday. With an attitude like that, :ombined with the toughness >eing instilled by the coaches, t would seem like this team is ping to have a great year. And, Jong with a grow-up-fast menality, this team could achieve nore than even it thinks it can.
