For many die-hard 1 Carolina fans, it began sometime after birth. But for many of you, the countdown begins now. If our calculus is correct, we have nine days until the season kicks off southern-style in Athens, Ga. against the University of Georgia. Another season is upon us, and there is excitement in Columbia that hasnt been around for quite some time. After last year's season, culminating in a dominating win over Clemson and the school's first-ever bowl win over West Virginia, Carolina fans are extremely optimistic about the future of Gamecock football. Season ticket sales are the highest since 1984, and four of the seven home games this year are already sold out (LSU, Vanderbilt, Florida and Clemson). National magazines have the Gamecocks ranked as high as 17, and, as the Sporting News says, "The Gamecocks need another year before strutting to the top." In all likelihood, that means the top of the SEC, up with the big boys. So what's to become of this year? Will the Cocks "strut to the top" a year early? Will South Carolina become the premier "up-and-coming" team of the SEC? Well, the truth is, we here at the Gamecock don't have a clue. True, Carolina is improving and working hard, but who isn't improving? Auburn, Florida, Alabama, and Tennessee are in a class by themselves, and every other team is looking to join that elite group. LSU, Georgia, and USC are the closest to joining the pack, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're close. A good barometer of just how close Carolina is would be to look at the Florida and Tennessee games last year. Tennessee came into Columbia and made it look easy before a late rally by Carolina made the final score 3122 in the Vols favor. In Gainesville, USC marched to an impressive 10-7 lead over Florida, but eventually the Gators woke up and trounced the Gamecocks, 48-17. So the answer should be clear, for now. It is clear, however, that USC football is headed in the direction of greatness. Mike McGee, Brad Scott & Co. have the ball rolling, and there's no sign of its stopping any time soon. We don't tmnK tnat any unaeieaied season will take place this season, but we strongly believe that there are some unprecedented things in store for this team within the next five years. Regardless, this season should be exciting and, with some hard work, the squad could improve on last season and make it two bowl victories in a row. The offense is sharp. Steve Taneyhill will be behind a veteran offensive line for the first time in his collegiate career. The wide receiving corps is solid, and if JUCO transfer Duce Staley and star Stanley Pritchett can be a formidable rushing duo, the offense could explode. The defense is another story. The departure of Chris Rumph, David Tumipseed, and Stacy Evans have left huge holes in the defensive line. The line will undoubtedly sufferlhe most, with zero starters returning to the mix; however, if Robert Smith, Hemy Taylor, Mike Washington, Quinn Brodie, James Flowers and JUCO transfers Patrick Garth and Melvin Houston can gel, things will improve. The linebacking corps is healthy, with Aubrey Brooks, Hank Campbell and Ronnie Smith returning to anchor the defense. If there is a most improved area on the team this year, it will be in the secondary. Ben Washington is already a star, and Terry Cousin has looked extremely tough in summer drills. True freshmen Ray Green and Jacinth Joseph have been very impressive this summer, and will likely see the gradual playing time this fall as Ben Washington did last year. Placekicker Reed Morton seems to have a lock on his job, but still has room for improvement. Punter Derwin Jeffcoat also needs to improve, and may be pressured by true freshman Steve Florio. The one thing that impresses me more and more about USC's football program is the growing depth of the team. At quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, and the secondary, this year's team is much more deep than last year's. And one thing that the Alabama's, the Auburn's and the Florida's have is loads of depth, which means that this program is headed in the right direction, and fast. DW HIRING $!$! The Georgia defense returns seven starters, including linebacker Randall Godfrey and defensive end Phillip Daniels. Joe Kines came from Arkansas to replace Marion Campbell as the defensive coordinator, and this side of the ball looks to be the Bulldogs' strong point. On offense, the departure of Eric Zeier and Hason Graham have made things a little shaky. Highly touted Mike Bobo takes over at QB, and, if last year's 206-yard day against Georgia Tech is any indication, Bobo is a formidable competitor. Catching Bobo's passes will be AllSBC candidate Brice Hunter, who makes NFL scouts drool. Sophomore running back Larry Bowie is a deadly slasher out of the backfield who can make some things happen. This game should be close from start to finish, the key being USCs unproven defense's ability to neutralize UGA's unproven offense. Does the name Joe Lee Dunn ring a bell? Dunn, the architect of USCs "Black Death" defense in 1987 has a job at Arkansas with former rival Danny Ford, who coached at Clemson when Dunn was at USC. With seven starters returning on defense, Dunn plans to implement immediately the "50" defense he made so popular at USC and, more recently, Ole Miss. With the kitchen sink being thrown at Taneyhill & Co., USC will have to rely on quick-out and fly patterns to alleviate the constant rush. Carolina's defense might struggle to contain the option like they did last year against the Razorbacks. If, by this time, the defensive line and linebackers have some continuity and cohesiveness, the Cocks could escape Fayetteville with a win. The Gamecocks and Bulldogs have had some furious contests in the past, but not this year. Depth, coaching, and home-field advantage should be too much for the Bulldogs this time around. The next week, USC resumes SEC play when they face the Kentucky Wildcats at Williams-Brice. After last season's 1-10 debacle, the Cats have nowhere to go but up. Tailback Moe Williams returns to help the offense. Carolina's offense should be able to control the Wildcat defense for the win; however, 1993's heartbreaking loss to the Kentucky on national television should be fresh on the minds of fans and players. The LSU Bayou Bengals invade Williams-Brice the next week with a brand new coach and talent galore. The Carolina defense will have its hands full with an experienced offense that returns eight starters, including all-everything Eddie Kennison. Plus, quarterback Jamie Howard will be determined to erase the nightmare he endured throughout last season. The LSU defense is led by mammoth defensive end Gabe Northern and middle linebacker Mike Calais, who will test USC's offensive line. On the last game of their four-game homestand, USC faces the Kent Golden Flashes, better known as "Open Date." If their 2-9 record in the "rough" MidAmerican conference is any indication, the "Open Dates" shouldn't be a problem for Carolina. USC travels to Starkville, Miss, on October 14 for a clash with the Mississippi State Bulldogs at 7 p.m. With only four offensive starters returning, and only one from the offensive line, the Bulldogs could have trouble on offense this season. On defense, it doesn't get any better, as only four starters return as well. This is a very, very critical game for Carolina If this truly is a below-average Bulldog team, then USC can't afford to lei this one get away. USC returns home to face the Vanderbilt Commodores on October 21 at ] p.m. This game has upset written al over it. Vanderbilt should improve up on last season's 5-6 record, and with 1C starters returning on defense and sev en on offense, Commodore fans shoulc be excited.
