So said George Eliot many years ago, and the words still hold true today. But in the midst of school ^ and jobs, many college students forget what the season used to be. With that in mind, here's a list of 50 ideal activities to help students remember the freedom (and the occasional boredom) of summers past. Read Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein out loud Hunt for railroad tracks and smash a few pennies. Climb a tree. Throw little pieces of paper at the person sitting in front of you in lecture and gaze at the ceiling, whistling when he looks around. Skip rocks on a creek or lake. Find one of those counter stools that revolves and spin until you get sick. Blow bubbles in your milk. (Or skip the milk altogether and blow spit bubbles.) Chew three pieces of bubble gum at once. Decorate your bike: Put playing cards in your spokes and make a wailing siren sound as your rid around campus. P Pick dandelions. ? Look at the stars. Try to catch crawdads, or go fishing with a stick, some string and a piece of hot dog (for bait). , Feed the ducks. Features Editor Carolina Welcome "95 is a weeklong festival of events set up to give students a rousing welcome back to campus, as well as to help them make the transition from the lazy days ol summer to the nose-to-the grind hard work of the school year. According to Carmela Carr, Interim Director of the Russell House and Coordinator of Carolina Welcome *95, it isn't all just information and good times. An underlying purpose is to add fuel to the fire of the Carolina spirit. "The purpose is to help build the USC community spirit among the faculty and students," she said. "Tc help acquaint new students with USC and to reacquaint returning students with USC. It's a big welcoming of everyone back to campus.' Carolina Welcome '95 is burst ing with opportunities for freshmen Those opportunities include meet ing new people and becoming fa miliar with the campus. "It helps them meet other freshmen, as well as other students," Can said. "Since the events are happening all over, they can get acquainted with the campus." Freshmen aren't the only ones who have a thing or two to learn. Everyone stands to benefit from the varying events of Carolina Welcome 495. "Students can participate in al of the events so they can meet nev people," Carr said. Pride in what you're doing and where you're at." Carolina Welcome *95 has more opportunities for students to meet one another than a singles bar. Hopefully, students will use these opportunities to come together and get the community spirit rolling. "They can come to the events with : j n ? k uie i esiueiicea uii men nuui, vsaii said. "They get to meet people, interact with people, and introduce | themselves." j The turnout for Carolina Welcomed has been good so far. Carr p noted very high attendance at Con' vocation and very good participation ? in the First Year Reading. The high turnout makes up for all of the hard work that went into putting the events together. I ^ "We started planning around the start of the Spring semester," she said. "Notices were sent out to departments and student organizar tions to start planning ahead. Each department can submit an event. Whoever wants to put on an event can, it just has to be open to all students. Some organizations are setj ting up information tables to get a | jump start on the year. Anybody is welcome to program." j Carr said that the success of Carf olina Welcome *95 is due to the fact that people are looking for something to do.
