It doesn't matter how we do it." South Carolina senior quarterback Steve Taneyhill has his sights on only one thing for his final season: winning. His career record at Carolina is a modest 16-13, but no other quarterback in school history has led the Gamecocks to a bigger win than Taneyhill. When the clock in Joe Robbie Stadium hit (KMX) on Jan 2,1995 to end the Carquest Bowl, Carolina fans could finally celebrate a bowl victory. Taneyhill came to USC in 1992 from Altoona, Pa. a highly touted prospect. He was a Parade Ail-American and Super Prep magazine rated him the No. 3 quarteiback prospect in the nation. For the first five games of his college career, | Taneyhill watched from the sidelines as j the Gamecocks lost Former Head Coach Sparky Woods inserted Taneyhill in the ( starting lineup against Mississippi State and the winning started. The Gamecocks put together four ; straight wins and lost a dose one at Flori- t da before taking on Clemson at Death j Valley. By leading Carolina to its first win over the hated Tigers since 1987 he captured the adoration of all Gamecock r fans. Then came the FALL. Taneyhill had been harassed by fans { concerning his long hair, earrings and brash personality early in the 1992 sea- , son but winning took the fans minds off j those. 1993 would not be as easy to for- r give to many fans. The season started ^ on just wnere vz enaea, a dramatic win { over Georgia in Athens, then the team seemed to fall apart Fourth quarter col- | lapses to Kentucky, Alabama, Florida j and hated Clemson left fans calling for | Taneyhill's head. s 1994 brought about a new feeling to ] USC, a fresh start, higher expectations, < Brad Scott It also gave Taneyhill a way ' to put 1993 to rest. He said he didn't let himself get down after '93, with Scott coming to Carolina from National Champs ^ FSU, Taneyhill had reason to be opti- ] mistic. ( "I was self motivated," he said. "I ^ didn't let myself get down or my team- j mates down. I just wanted to come back and play better." ( He turned himself around and j brought the whole team with him. He ] finished the season with 19 touchdowns . and only eight interceptions compared j to *93*8 six ID'S and 14 INTs. , Although he could rightfully look for ! some accolades, Taneyhill said to him it has never been about individual goals, , "team goals are the most important." i Like when he took off for the goal , line in the second quarter of the Car- j quest Bowl. He said he wasn't trying to ( be a star, he just wanted to help his team. "The times I've run its been by chance," Taneyhill said. "I probably got lucky in the bowl game, it was just some- ' thing that happened, spur of the mo- , ment. I did what I had to do to help the ball club get some points on the board. ng-distance bills? oupon (a $30 Value) it-up prepaid & re-chargable calling 120 minutes of FREE calling time lere in the continental U.S. EpfiiceMagic" 1-803-760-7278 M?. 103 3402 Fernandina Road, Suite C, 15 Columbia, SC 29210 jp r | f:: W'|$ _ lAjwr pec-Ks j? ?
