BYRON JAMES Columnist As I write my last column of my undergraduate career, I am consumed by a spectrum of emo4-: - T? .1-1- i * 1 Liuns. i am eiatea at tne tnougnt of law school and graduation, but I'm saddened at the thought of leaving my friends and family. I am excited at the prospect of the new challenges that lie ahead, but I am disappointed that I won't see the Horseshoe every day or see the football team rush into Williams-Brice. Before I leave, I want to discuss three topics: the difference between Republicans and Democrats, the quality of life of students living on campus and the people who had an impact on me during my years here at Carolina. First and foremost, Republicans care about money, and Democrats care about people. That was clearly shown last month when S.C. House Republicans voted to roll back DroDertv taxes on the backs of K-12 and college students. Newt and his gang of thugs want to balance the budget on the backs of poor and working-class Americans, who make up a majority of this country. I believe in welfare reform, but I don't believe in throwing people off a program when they don't have a way to survive. I support fixing a broken system, but I won't hurt the real victims of the problem ? children. Republicans must learn to understand that leadership means representing all citizens, not just the ones who contribute to their campaigns. Since my freshman year, I have had a great quality of life living on campus except for a few instances. Residence advisers usually facilitate the quality of living, but for the last two years, especially on the Horseshoe, the RAs have been zealots hellbent on giving residents unnecessary grief. David Haller ? he taught me everything I know about politics and friendship and what comes first. He also taught me the three rules of politics: 1. Know your enemies as well as you know your friends. 2. You're always the low man on someone else's totem pole. 3. Always know your place. For all of these things, I am truly grateful. In my formative years here at Carolina, Jeff Wilson was my mentor and friend. He taught me courage and to face adversity with dignity and a sharp tongue. As time went by, I became the father as I watched my kids grow up. As I watched Cassie Sturkie and Brian Comer win the Sulli van, the highest award a student can win, my heart was full as I remember her delivering her speech for Freshman Council president and the late nights discussing politics with Brian. I have worked on campaigns for five years, and for four of those years I have worked with or against Brad Holt. He has been my student, my colleague, my successor and, most of all, my friend. Julye Johns has taught me that you can really strike a balance between academics, student organizations and getting a groove on; Julye, keep grooving. Trav Robertson has filled my life with politics and bourbon. He is truly a South Carolina gentleman and will represent Anderson honorably in the Legislature. The kids ? you know who you are ? don't try to replace me, carve your own niche. You will gain more respect and success that way. Finally, Jenny Wu, my friend and partner, has been my light in the darkest hour, my support in times of need and my only friend when the others turned their backs. If it wasn't for Jenny, I wouldn't be where I am today. These are just a few people who have touched my life, and I hope I have touched their lives in a positive way, also. To everyone, including the Re publicans, I wish you well, and I hope everyone has much success. I have heard from many of my peers and professors about the poor image that the legal profession has labored under these past few years. Darn it, it's just not fair! I have also read how the administration here at USC-Golumbia has been maligned by people who just don't know how difficult it is to run a university on a dwindling budget, and darn it, it's just not fair! Then a couple of weeks ago, I read about how USC law Professor Randall "Caller ID" Chastain is still collecting his $62,000-a-year salary while not teaching any classes. You see, Chastain has allegedly ripped off several of his former clients by collecting money up front and not doing the work. Those who have given the good professor their hard-earned scratch have been unable to aven get their calls returned. The S.C. Bar is seeking disciplinary action against Chastain, and Dean John Montgomery las suspended him from all teaching duties. Since Chastain is a tenured professor, he cannot be removed without going through President John r>~i raiuis. Meanwhile, your tuition rates are going up igain. And darn it, it's just not fair.
