LAW continued from page 1
Montgomery said.
Beyond that, however, Montgomery
said he can't do much because there's
no procedure to suspend a tenured faculty
member. Only USC President John
Palms can start the process to revoke
tenure, Montgomery said.
"It reflects very badly on the law
school," said Danno Farrington, a thirdyear
law student and outgoing editor in
chief of the USC Law Review. "Here
they are toying to turn out ethical lawyers,
and look at who we have on staff."
The faculty handbook says losing a
license could be grounds to revoke tenure
if the license is needed for the faculty
member to perform his or her job.
USC spokeswoman Debra Allen said
Palms "feels this is a grave and disturbing
situation," but she and Chastain's
lawyer, Desa Ballard, would not
comment further. They said the school
and Chastain were "involved in discussions"
about what to do.

whether ifs too hard to get rid of tenured
faculty members, said Thomas.
