Letters to the Editor Dougherty went too far I am responding to a letter that appeared in the March 24 issue of Hie Gamecock. This letter was penned by Jennifer Dougherty, a former leader among the hard-working, professionally-minded people that make up Student Media. In her letter, she almost goes as far as to say that WUSC, the campus radio station, would change in a negative way if a candidate for station manager, Patrick Biyant, were to be elected. Jennifer and I were colleagues once, both being station managers during 1993.1 worked with the student television station, WCFG. We are alike in the sense that we take pride in what we accomplished during our tenure. We have very strong feelings of what is best for our respective organizations, including what we play or choose to program. And Jennifer has every right to fight for those beliefs, even if she is no longer directly involved with WUSC. There are many people who feel just as strongly in leaving the music format the way it is. That's what I feel Jennifer sought to express in her letter to the editor. But in that letter, Jennifer Dougherty made the most unprofessional mistake of them all: She personally attacked another individual mm mWm fr m MM IB" fm Bm m mmi iii mA Whichever direction you dec take, we can help you get there with a brand new Ford or Merc If you're a graduating senior, c you can get $400 Cash Back 01 "Special Annual Percentage Rate alternative not avi or be enrolled in graduate school, between 1/1/93 a The Gar just because his views are different from her own. She portrays Patrick Biyant as self-serving and flashy, an albatross whose only accomplishment has been a trail of failure. You can believe me when I and countless other friends, faculty, administrators and professionals say that Patrick Bryant is none of these things. Or you can trust your gut instinct that says there's something very wrong when someone like Jennifer goes to that length to put her beliefs and achievements on so lofty a pedestal, and within the same passage drag those of another through the mud. Indicentally, Jennifer, if WCFG "was a failure and went bust under his management" (her words), how can you explain mine and the terms of other station managers who followed Patrick and kept WCFG running to this day? I know I am a third party to all of this, but I would like to make two suggestions. The first is to all those who read The Gamecock: Have your doubts of those who would take "liberties" with what they present as the truth. My second suggestion is to Jennifer: Pick up your poisoned pen and make a public apology, not only to Patrick Bryant, but to all students and alumni who have worked for the integrity and mutual respect of the business we are in. Trust me, I think they deserve one. Michael Sowa Media arts graduate student life, ;A- \?s\ / -'Mj ;' v iwk Ltfftt:n| ? . Darcie Shively SG vice president WUSC needs changes As of late, I've read a great deal about the possible restructuring of WUSC. This, to me, appears to be a very necessary undertaking. VVTJSC, while attempting to provide diversified music for a diversified campus, has excluded the majority of our campus with their elitist programming. The Gamecock reported recently that every student, in their activity fees, pays $3 per year for WUSC.
