He's the kind of musician that doesn't rely upon techno-junky synthesizers and prefabricated tunes as some sort of mainstay. Rather, he relies upon himself. On Sweet's latest release, "100% Fun," he manages to play at least two instruments on every song, as well as provide vocals - like he has done on most of his releases such as "GirlMend" and "Altered Beast." Yet, on "100% Fun," Sweet turns some of the duties over to the more than capable Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien, who is known primarily for his work with producing and mixing Pearl Jam, lends his piano and guitar talents to each of Sweefs songs. a l -?4_; c i. r>:? a a l i msu assisting owcei, 12s rue lvitxa. anu Stuart Johnson on drums and Greg Leisz on mandolin, lap guitar and pedal steel guitar. With all the aid Sweet gets from these artists on "100% Fun," the true quality of this compact disc reverts back to the fact that Sweet manages to dominate most songs with his vocals and guitar contributions. The latest release off this CD, "We're The Same," exemplifies this. On this particular song, Sweet plays the electric rhythm guitar, the electric 12-string rhythm and lead guitars, the acoustic guitar, the electric bass and handles the vocals. "We're Die Same" is a great choice for another reason - its poppy lyrics. He writes about love in almost every song mixing it with death ("Lost My Mind"), sadness ("Giving It Back"), hate ("Not When I Need If) and dedication ("Sick of Myself). Deep within the sugary sweet lyrics of love, Sweet manages to be a bit poetic. For example in "I Almost Forgot": "You would never turn around \ You're laughing at everything\Thafs bringing me down \ Did you say you loved me?\I almost forgot \ I almost forgot." Well, he's poetic in a rhyming sense. Anyway, "100% Fun" is a good attempt at redemption, which Sweet seems to be doing after his "Altered _ Beast" CD that was chock-hill of upbeat emotions such as self pity and . loathing. Sweet seems to be getting back in the successful "Girlfriend" mode that seemed to work more than I well for him. nts respect 1 ? one thing?career pub I licity ? and not using | 0 J.
