Sports loon NBA BOSTON (AP) ? The Boston Celtics, preparing to retire Reggie Lewis' number Wednesday night, again face allegations their late captain used cocaine. Derrick Lewis told The Wall Street Journal he and Reggie Lewis used cocaine in a Maryland hotel before a game. Reggie Lewis collapsed five days later, April 29,1993, during a game against Charlotte and died in August 1993 after collapsing shooting baskets. The two were high school friends ana teammates at iNortneastern university in the mid-1980s. Derrick Lewis said the two did a lot of "heavy partying, mostly with marijuana" and that "I want to set the record straight." Suggestions of drug use arose two weeks ago in a Journal report exploring Lewis' death. The newspaper said Lewis refused to take a drug test and questioned whether concerns about finances and publicity may have prompted the Celtics to ignore drugs as an explanation. Saturday, The Boston Globe reported that Lewis may have failed a cocaine test while he prepared to play in the 1987 NCAA Tournament. Rodman, the NBA rebounding leader, sustained a third-degree separation that could sideline him for a month. He was put on the injured list Sunday. Baseball ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? ( Columnist g Spr* RYAN WILSON Hey, sports fans! I don't know about you guys, but Arkansas and UCLA gave me a scare Sunday in the NCAA Tourney. If those teams had lost, I might as well have thrown my brackets away, because that would have been half my Final Four out the window. Speaking of the tournament, as if there was anything else to talk about this time of year, there were some huge upsets that might cost me from getting my investment back. (Oh, I'm not talking about gambling because thafs illegal in this state. Which reminds me of the time I was in one of those bingo palacea..wdl, thafs another stay anyway.) The downfall of Villanova and Oklahoma gave me second-round losses that will haunt me in the long run, but if my Final Four teams survive, I should be alright. The four ACC teams are still alive and could all make the finals, but it is very unlikely. Oh where is "the most powerful conference in the country," aka Jordan stays Associated Pre? DEEKFTELD, 111. ? Michael Jordan called the hype surrounding his return embarrassing. He said he's only human and shouldn't be treated like a god. He's not naive, though, and knows the second coming of Michael Jordan is an event of worldwide interest, if not of biblical proportions. "I think the whole world has an eye on me," he said Monday, the day after his thrilling return to pro basketball. "Hopefully, that eye is kind of closing and will blink a little bit from now on." At home...watching the real teams play. Thursday's games in the Southeast bracket look to be real yawners. Kentucky should roll over an undermanned Arizona State team. North CarolinaGeorgetown has a nice matchup of Rasheed Wallace and Othella Harrington, but when he's shooting well, freshman phenom Allen Iverson tends to ignore Harrington in the paint, and that could cost the Hoyas. These games should set up a meeting between the Wildcats and the Tar Heels Saturday. Both teams have outstanding starting fives, but UNCs depth is still questionable. Look for Pitino's team to stay away from Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse and keep the ball on the perimeter and bomb the 3. Kentucky has the team to blow out the Tar Heels. The West bracket, in which I haven't missed a game yet in one of my illegal pools, has two great games on tap for Thursday. UCLA battles Errick Dampier and Mississippi State in the early game, with Maryland-Connecticut following. The Bruins are too athletic for the Bulldogs, and Dampier can't carry the team by himself. The same can be said optimistic after the attention will have on the Chicago Bulls. Tm trying to get us settled so that we can get back to playing basketball and so that my teammates are not exposed to something that they don't feel comfortable with," he said. "I think that was the most embarrassing part. Some of those guys were exposed to something that they really didn't ask for, and it put them in a veiy difficult position." UConn and Maryland both have looked a little shaky lately but should battle each other to the wire. UCLA will continue its path to Seattle by beating the Huskies Saturday. Ed CBannon will continue his dominance and stake his claim for tournament MVP as the Bruins dominate the Huskies. The Midwest early semifinal game Friday will pit upstart Memphis against overtime-loving Arkansas. What is wrong with the Hogs? They need to keep Coriiss Williamson in the game to be effective, and he has fouled out of the past three. Even considering all of this, they are still too strong for the Tigers. The late game will have Kansas or Virginia squaring off Sunday against the Hogs. As I have said before, Kansas is a shaky No. 1 seed, and the Wahoos play the roll of giant killer well. UVA's Junior Burrough should take Cro-Magnon man Greg Ostertag back to the stone age. Sundays regional final should be a very competitive game between the Cavaliers and the Razorbacks. The Williamson-Burrough battle should be fun to watch, but the Hogs are too talented. They just need to keep from playslow start in might take an adjustment period. "I said, 'Well, it kind of gives us a psychological edge this year.' To come back now, it kind of takes some teams by surprise." The first game of his comeback even surprised Jordan. He hadn't played in an NBA game since June 20,1993, when he led the Bulls to a third consecutive championship. So he never thought he'd play 43 minutes Sunday in Chicago's 103-96 overtime loss at Indiana. "The competitive side of me wanted to be in there.
