The USC men's basketball team (612,
2-7) earned its first road win of the
season Saturday with a 76-74 victory

the field, with Carey Rich and Melvin
Watson leading the way. Rich connected
on four of 10 shots from the field and
10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Watson
hit seven of his 13 attempts from
the field and four of seven from the charity
stripe.
Watson's free throws came at a crucial
time. He missed his first three shots
from the line, but with 17 seconds left
and Carolina holding a two-point lead,
he nailed two to give his team the lead
for good.
"I took my time and shot the ball just
like Fm taught in practice," Watson said.
"When they fell, I was happy."
South Carolina entered the contest
shooting 41 percent from the field as a
team. The Gamecocks also improved
their free-throw shooting, hitting 18 of
26 against the Commodores. For the season,
they are shooting 60 percent from
the free-throw line.
Rebounding was another key in the
Gamecock win. USC out-rebounded Vanderbilt
35-30. Andy Bostick led the team
with eight boards. Ryan Stack finished
second with six.
USC coach Eddie Fogler got big numbers
from all his starters against the
Commodores. Malik Russell and Pete
Van Elswyk each finished with 11 points.
Van Elswyk is averaging 4.4 points a
game. Russell has raised his scoring averaee
to 9.7. crivinc the Gamecocks four
players averaging 9.5 points or more.
Rich leads the team with an average
of 13.4, followed by backcourt mate Watson
with 12.6, with Bostick rounding out
the top three with an average of 10.9.

three-pointers, the Commodores mounted
a comeback. For the game, Vanderbilt
hit 14 of 34 three-pointers. Leading
the way was Ronnie McMahan, who connected
on five of 11 treys. Frank Seckar
hit six of his nine shots from behind the
three-point line
The win gave Fogler his first win
against his former team since his arrival
in Columbia last season. The Commodores
defeated the Gamecocks 96-91 in Columbia
last year.
South Carolina will play four consecutive
SEC games, with Ole Miss coming
to Columbia Wednesday. The Gamecocks
will travel to Gainesville to battle
the Florida Gators Saturday and return
home to play Auburn Feb. 15 and Vanderbilt
again Feb. 18.
