(AP) ? Mod erates in the South Carolina Baptis Convention worry that solidified cor servative control will chill academic fret dom at Baptist colleges, but many fat ulty members say the fears are mis placed. Moderate Baptist leaders fear th fundamentalists could force out profes sors who didn't fall in line with their tx liefs, as some say has happened at se\ eral Southern Baptist seminaries. "Once the board (of a Baptist college becomes primarily conservative the the ological thinking of the board will cei tainly penetrate into the classroom," sail Winnie Williams of Clemson, head c the state branch of the moderate Coop erative Baptist Fellowship. "We have seen this happen on th national level, and there is no reason t believe that it will not happen on th state level," she said. "Open-minded students will not g to such colleges and seminaries," sail Hardy Clemons, pastor of the First Bap tist Church of Greenville and past na tional leader of the same moderate or ganization. "And professors will not stay. North Greenville shifted to the righ a few years ago with the appointmen of several new trustees, and no change in curriculum were ordered then, sail Robert Detjen, chairman of the scienc division at North Greenville. Many l* of the students are oriented toward creationism, while most faculty lean toward evolution, he said. Many moderates, frustrated over their inability to effectively challenge the conservatives, stayed away from last month's annual convention in Columr. bia, observers said. Attendance at the event was down by about 1,000 this year 5) from last year. s- New charters were approved for all the state's Baptist colleges ? North ^ Greenville, Anderson and Charleston Southern. The new charters and a new convention constitution give the convention 0 has sole authority to appoint trustees, e except on a temporary basis. The faculty at Anderson College went 0 on record a few months ago opposing the d college's changing its charter and giv> ing up leeway to leave the convention. But the faculty now doesn't look for any curriculum changes resulting from the conservative tide. "I don't think there's any great fear on the part of the faculty that we're go^ ing to be dictated to," said Pat Mulligan, faculty chairwoman.
