A native of Fargo, N.D., the 6-2 middle blocker posted a 4.0 GPA majoring in political science for her second consecutive year. She helped USC post a 22-10 overall record and 8-6 SEC record, starting 31 of 32 matches. She was named to the All-SEC second team this season posting 303 kills, 353 digs and 107 total blocks. She was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll two straight years. "Katie is an exceptional studentathlete in the classroom as well as on the court," head coach Kim Hudson said. "She is a true leader and achiever in every aspect." The Southeastern Conference placed three selections to the District ID All-Academic Team. Other mem bers from the conference are Missy Aggert of Florida, garnering the most votes, and Nikki Nicholson of Georgia. Now that the college football regular season has ended, I think ifs time to really sum up the Heisman race. (I'm a Heisman voter, but I play one one on T V, as most of the ESPN College Gameday staff does.) The Heisman recipient is clear to me, Colorado's Rashaan Salaam. He is only the fourth running back in college football history to rush over 2000 yards in a season. That mark alone should get him the award. Penn State's KiJana Carter has a slight chance, but teammate Keny Collins being a top candidate takes away from both of their chances. Both Lions are among the top in the nation at their positions. To put it in simple terms, he does not face the type of talent the other candidates have faced. His numbers are impressive, but he would not be as productive in a conference like the SEC or Big Ten. Imagine what an Eric Zeier or a Kerry Collins would do against the SWAC defenses McNair faced all year. He said his numbers would be better in Division I, but his game against Youngstown State Friday showed what would happen against a good team. Sure, he was 52-82 for 514 yards against the Penguins, but his team still lost 63-20. If anyone attempts 82 passes in a game, they are going to produce some big numbers. He got under center four times in Friday's game, and three were for quarterback sneaks. His performance against Youngstown probably hurt his chances more than it helped them. And to think the Division I-AA playoffs passed over a good S. C. State team so they could have McNair in the playoffs. Someone said recently the Bowl Coalition should change the rules so Alcorn State could play in a bowl game. It wasn't until my father made a com ment aDout solving the depth problem that I realized something was seriously wrong. He pointed out USC has a enrollment of over 25,000 students, but they can only field a basketball team of nine players. (Some of those players are not even eligible to play this year.) The numbers don't add up. So the student body is forced to watch a good basketball team lose games simply because it does not have the depth to compete. (The USC women's team is in the same situation). I am sure that Coach Fogler can find at least three or four people on this campus that can play basketball competitively. There are guys nn this ramniis whn wnnld inmn nt thf> chance to be on the USC basketball team under coach Fogler even without a scholarship. All the team needs is some people to practice against.
