Rock, ra| RYAN WILSON Asst. Sports Editor It's that time of year again! Time once again to celebrate the gift of giving. It is the time of year for everyone to get their Christmas wish list in order. My friends and family say that T am at that a era whon they just don't know what to get me. To help these people out, I just make a list of albums that I want and hand it to my mother so she can delegate who's going to buy what. Sure it takes the surprise out of it, but I look at it as money I won't have to SDend later. To make it easier for those who don't know what to get their loved ones, I have compiled several lists of music selections that you just can't go wrong with, no matter what the musical taste your are catering to. These lists are divided into categories with the best album listed first and a description of what makes them good. Country 1. Mary Chapin Carpenter, Come On Come on: A great selection of catchy tunes. "Passionate Kisses" is the We SPECIAL ORDER Books, Music & Videos mam^ammmam T p and roll You can't go wr pop-ish No. 1 hit of the album. 2. Garth Brooks, No Fences: Clearly Brooks' best work. This album signaled his rise to superstardom. "Wolves" is a great ending to a good album. 3. Sawyer Brown, The Dirt Road: This rockabilly band has put out some great singles off this LP, but the rest of cuts are even better. 4. Vince Gill, I Still Believe In You: Modern country's best balladeer in his finest hour. 5. Travis Tritt, T-R-O-U-B-LT7i mi ? . t ine title cut is the reason to own this album. Rock-alternative 1. REM, Automatic for the People: REM shys away from the spotlight, but still produces one for the decade. "Everybody Hurts" and "Find the River" never get old. 2. Pearl Jam, Ten: The album that defined a generation? "Black" grabs at the soul and i doesn't let go. Everyone needs a copy. I 3. 'Nuff said. 4. Toad the Wet Sprocket, Dulcinea: The guys from out west and the work that will make them a household name. 5. Alice in Chains, Dirt: The sorrows of drug addiction. You gotta love it. Bands with dreamysounding vocalist 1. The Cranberries, No Need to Argue: Dolores O'Riordan will mesmerize you. 2. The Juliana Hatfield Three, Become What You Are: The petit rocker wails about the perils of sex and siblings. 3. The Sundays, Blind: Their cover of the Stones' "Wild Horses" is almost better than the original. 4. Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars: It was all downhill after this debut. It's their greatest hits without calling it so. Bandwagon bands 1. Counting Crowes, August and Everything After: It's the best wagon to jump on. There are few bad songs on Jihe album. 2. The Dave Matthews Band, Remember Two Things: A unique band that deserves a listening to, once you get past the merchandise ads. 4. Hootie and the Blowfish, Cracked Rearview: It's hard to believe that there are people who still don't own this album. 5. Candlebox, Candlebox: Madonna's first signee to her Maverick label, but the songs begin to run together. Best metal 1. Queensryche, Operation: Mindcrime: This concept album made a lifelong fan out of me. It has been called a soundtrack for a movie that x siari [ your I Holiday \ Shopping \Early! Tool, Undertow: The band with the cool stop-animation videos hits hard with a wellproduced album. 4. Megadeth, Peace Sells, but Who's Buying?: It's a wonder Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica. 5. Anthrax, Attack of the Killer Bs: A collection of B sides and rarities. The album ends with "Bring the Noise" with Public Enemy. Best soundtracks 1. The Last of the Mohicans: PowPrflll strincrc fnr a Kncrnti ? ? . . w vx 1VI U UVUUU ful movie. The higher the volume, the better the sound. 2. Peter Gabriel, Passion: The soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ." Mixture of Mideast rhythms with Gabriel's stylings. 3. Singles: The world of Seattle on one album. "Chloe Dancer" makes you wish Andrew Wood was still alive. 4. Judgement Night: A whole album of rock and rap.
