winning note as Carolina dominates
both sides of the ball.
RYAN WILSON Asst. Sports Editor
South Carolina tailback Brandon ti
Bennett had spent the second half of N
the season fielding questions about his
running. He spent the second half of tc
Saturday's landmark win against Clem- a
son answering them. C(
The Gamecocks senior rushed for n
104 yards ? 72 after halftime ? and
set up an electrifying kickoff return to p
start the second half as South Carolina _
beat Clemson 33-7 on Saturday.
Bennett ran for 405 yards in the first a
four games but averaged less than 50 t
yards rushing in his next six games. a
"I really wanted to have a good show- g
ing here today because there were ques- c
tions about whether I had lost a step,"
he said. "I wanted to show everybody t
I'm still the Brandon Bennett I was." j
Steve Taneyhill threw for 226 yards t
and an 18-yard score to Toby Cates as t
South Carolina (6-5) qualified for its c
first bowl trip since 1988. c
Clemson (5-6), which had won its
three previous games, was limited to i
177 yards overall and just 122 yards 1
rushing. The Tigers, 9-3 a year ago, end- <
ed with their second losing season in ]
three years. i
It was South Carolina's biggest win
at Death Valley in front of over 85,000, j
a record crowd at Memorial Stadium, i
Bennett's 6-yard TD burst came on
the second play after halftime and put
South Carolina up 21-7. Bennett, not 1
known to showboat after he scores, i
danced a little jig he calles the "But- ]
terfly."

stylish celebration.
T didn't get to see his end zone dance,
but when we watch the game film, I'll
get a chance to critique it," Taneyhill
said.
Bennett's touchdown came one play
after a kickoff return that seemingly
broke the Tigers' back. The play, taken
from somewhere deep in the pages of
Bobby Bowden's playbook, was a simple
across-the-field pass from Bennett
to Reggie Richardson on the kickoff open

Bennett took the kickoff a step into
ie end zone, ran up the right side and
irew to an open Richardson at the 10,
ho dashed down the left sidelines un1
he tripped over teammate Darryl
icklow at the six.
"We knew if I could get everybody
) go over there, we'd just have Reggie,
nd we could set a wedge up, and he
Duldjust go down the sidelines," Benett
said.
Coach Brad Scott said the team had
racticed the play ? called the Gator
- for the Florida game a week earlier.
"We've been practicing that play for
. long time," he said. "It wasn't somehinsr
that we iust put in. Our kids have
i lotof confidence in it. We just never
;ot in a game situation where it was
lose enough to use it."
The Gamecocks ultimately won in
he second half by breaking Clemson's
roise. The Tigers led the country in
urnover margin, but four Clemson
urnovers led to 19 points. Punt returns
>f 73 and 61 yards by Cates were wiped
>ut because of penalties.
"I don't think we lost our poise or
vere rattled because when they scored
Irst, we answered right back," Clemson
coach Tommy West said. "We just
lad a chance to make plays and we didn't
make them."
Reed Morton added second-half field
goals of 24 and 27 yards for South Carolina.
The Gamecocks' largest win at Memorial
Stadium was 24-13 two years ago,
when Taneyhill threw for 296 yards and
two touchdowns as a freshman. Their
biggest victory in the series was 56-20
in 1975 at Williams-Brice.
Taneyhill also showed a little flash
of the flamboyant player of seasons past
by stomping on the Tiger Paw as the
game wound down.
"Our offense put up the points we
needed, but our defense really stepped
it up," Taneyhill said. "One drive is all
(Clemson) had all game. The same happened
two years ago. Our senior class
and junior class are 2-0 up here and
were really proud of that."
South Carolina had trouble getting
started despite Taneyhill throwing for
191 yards and a touchdown in the first
half. A first-quarter drive ended on ClemINTRODUCING:
