As students young and old return to
the hallowed halls of campus life, they
probably don't know they're being
watched.
Hollywood always has its eyes fixed
on American colleges, where, for once in
their life, students can be themselves,
explore the possibilities, and party hard.

Program, living life in an Animal House,
or trying to graduate With Honors ,
movies definitely have different views of
the best years of life.
How accurately does Hollywood portray
the life we live? Here's just a few
examples of some studio offerings from
the past ten years:
Revenge of the Nerds (1984)?
Shunned by the college jocks and beauty
queens, a group of misfits forms their
own fraternity. After fraternity council
threatens their way of life, the nerds
exact sweet revenge including winning
the homecoming carnival and showing
off their combined talents. Ending in a
triumphant rendition of "We are the
Champions," this film shows us we all
have something to offer. Oddly enough,
the computer abilities and organizational
man acre men t skills the nerds Dossess
would make them achieve great success
in today's world.
Real Genius (1985) A whiz-kid
recruited to come to college early finds
out he is rooming with a wise-cracking
student scientist, played by Val Kilmer.
When they discover their think tank is
being exploited by unscrupulous government
officials, they rise to the challenge
to buck the system. This honors college
is a mixture of scholars and screw-ups
and features such intricate inventions
as a solar pocorn popper triggered by
laser beams, a closet rollercoaster
through intricate tunnels in the residence
halls, and ice corridors for the

never forgets to have fun.
Back to School (1986) Rodney
Dangerfield plays Thornton Melon, a
self-made millionare, who returns to college
to boost his son's self esteem,
begins to overshadow him, and eventually
learns what student life is really all
about. Featuring music by Oingo Boingo
and a fresh cast including Sally
Kellerman as Thornton's sexy poetry
professor and Robert Downey Jr. as a
protesting crusader against school athletics,
nuclear warheads and life in general,
the film shows a man who thinks

he can buy his way through college but
finds out that students today value academic
integrity over getting other people
to take your exams and purchasing
research papers. When Thornton gets
assistance from writer Kurt Vonnegut to
write a research paper on himself and
Thornton still doesn't make the grade,
he starts to realize that maybe he'll
have to do his own work to graduate. As
he begins to succeed on his own right,
he finally earns a little of his son's

School Daze (1988) One of Spike
Lee's earliest films is a comedy, a fantasy
and a musical about modern-day life
on a black college campus in the South,
where a serious student fights the powers
that be. It's a lonely battle against
the administration and against wild students
wrapped up in their own little
worlds. Featuring Larry Fishburne,
Ossie Davis, and Tisha Campbell, it's an
early glimpse into how Lee fashions
entertainment from issues that ignite
the mind such as racism, scholarship,
division, and tradition. Lee says that
people need to unite because we all have
the same concerns about our future.

dent who gets caught up in the zany
mob family of his new love interest.
Headed by Marlon Brando who reprises
and spoofs his Godfather role, the mob
gets Broderick's character in a farfetched
adventure. The freshman learns
that college life has its ups and downs
and that some day3 are better than others.
Threestnmp (1994.1 When a woman
played by Lara Flynn Boyle is given the
wrong residence hall assignment and
ends up rooming with two guys, sparks
begin to fly. One guy (Josh Charles)
thinks he's gay and in love with his
roommate (Stephen Baldwin) who is
infatuated by the new lady of the house,
and she likes both of them. Needless to
say, strange things are afoot as they
come to terms with a newfound friendship
and their sexual tension. Fueled by
a soundtrack which includes U2, Tears
for Fears, and General Public, it's a
glossy look at tough issues, but it's a lot
of fun too. It's a glimpse at how we have
different friends at different times in
college, especially when we need them
the most.
