So what if, the next morning, you may not even remember the film's name? Even better, they'll recall Adam Sandler, one of the few bright spots on "Saturday Night Live" these days, thanks to his Operaman, Cajunman and Canteen Boy characters, was given a showcase for his off-beat humor. In "Airheads," Sandler plays Buscemi's brother Pip, The Lone Rangers' slightly daft but loveable drummer. The film's plot is simple: Desperate to get a demo tape of their would-be classic song played, the trio inadvertantly takes a radio station hostage. The more desperate the situation gets, the funnier the film. "I was a good time," says Sandler in a Manhattan hotel. "I didn't know any of the guys when I got there, and all of the sudden it became a family. Mantega, Brendan, Buscemi and (Michael) McKean (the station's slimy program director), they're all good friends of mine now, It is like being in summer camp. It was also my first big part in a movie, so it was exciting." "I was a guitar player and sang with my band," says Sandler who delivers solid Axl Rose and Eddie Vedder imitations on "SNL." "Every time we'd be in a situation (in the film) where the band was set up to play I was very excited. But" - he mocks mopes -"they wouldn't turn on our amplifiers. So I was kind of frustrated." Moving on, there's SNL, which took a critical beating this past season. Sandler agrees that "SNL" had "some good shows and some shows that didn't click," and argues tnat staying on top isnt easy. That much is true: Every few seasons, "SNL" has needed to regroup, be revamped and virtually start fresh. When "SNL" returns this fall, Sandler will be back, as will Chris Farley (who plays a put-upon cop in "Airheads") and Michael McKean (who joined SNL late last season, after filming "Airhead" ). Gone are talented Phil Hartman, Rob Schneider and Julia Sweeney and the one-note Melanie Hutsell. Sandler hopes the funny-to-not-funny will lean toward the funny, but knows failure is part of the game. "The best part is the you can have a bad show one week, and you're dying for the next Saturday to redeem yourself," he says. At 17, Sandler began preforming stand-up comedy. During the 1990-91"SNL" season, producers Lome Michaels hired Sandler as a writer after seeing him at a comedy club. He got his first screen time in a skit with Tom Hanks and Dana Carvey. "I had two lines," recalls Sandler. "I got out there and said to myself,This is it.' My head was spinning. I was saying, "Don't faint.' I didn't think that I would faint, but if I did I would have looked pretty stupid. I would have been a famous guy right away...the fainting guy." All in all, Sandler has few complaints about the way his career has evolved. "How could he actually? I guess its what I expected," he says of success. "It hasn't changed things for me. I'm not Marky Mark, with people crying and screaming when they meet me. It is just on occasion. It's someone saying, 'Hey, "Saturday Night Live!'" and I go, 'What's up! That's it. that's how it changed. On occasion when I'm in a restaurant someone will watch me chew for too long.
