LJr * 111 mi i i w Tennis tea By TONY SANTORI Sports Editor The Gamecock men's tennis team defeated Arkansas 4-0 Tuesday at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. The Gamecocks (18-5, 4-5) started quickly by winning two of three doubles matches and, subsequently, the doubles point. Junior Jim Panagopoulos and sophomore Maxsy Jimenez, who are ranked No. 47 in the nation, teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles. The duo dominated the Razorbacks' Michael Phillips and Jason Todd, winning 8-2. Junior Ben Cook and freshman Mark Bommelje took their match at No. 3 doubles to give the Gamecocks the point. Cook and Bommelje downed Arkansas' Juan Herrera and HenrikAndersson in a close match, winning the final three games and the match 8-6. Jimenez improved to 20-7 in singles play with his straight-set victory against Euan McGinn at No. 2 singles. Jimenez won easily 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Jorge Esquida also im proved to 20-7 in singles with his win over Arkansas' Herrera. The Guadalajara, Mexico, native took the No. 4 singles match 6-2, 6-1. Bommelje closed out the Gamecocks' victory by winning at No, 5 singles. The Orlando, Fla., native downed Phillips 6-4, 6-2 and has won nine of his past 10 matches. With the win, USC's home record improves to 15-1. Four conference wins is the most for the Gamecocks since joining the SEC in 1991. The Gamecocks will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide today at 4 p.m. at the Varsity Courts in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
