Sounds ol From Staff Reports The sounds of jazz, swing and big band music will fill the air April 20-21 during USC's Stellar Jazz Festival XI. The festival's highlight is a 7:30 p.m. concert April 21, featuring guest artist John Fedchock, a nationally known trombonist, and two USC jazz ensembles. The conceit will be held in Drayton Hall Theatre on Sumter Street. Tickets to the concert are 18 for the public and $5 for students, senior citizens and military personnel. They are avail able at the Coliseum box office. To order by phone, call 777-7228. The concert will feature two USC ensembles: the Left Bank Big Band, conducted by Roger Pemberton, who directs USC's jazz studies program; and the Bank Group Combo, conducted by music professor Bert Ligon. The band also will play two original compositions by Ligon with baseball themes. The first is "High and Outside," a high-energy blues tune. The other is "Spring Fever," modeled after Phil Collins' music. The band also will play two compositions by the current Count Basie Orchestra band leader, Frank Foster, called I he Booze Brothers and we Be Jammin'," as well as works by other composers. The four-member Bank Group Combo will feature original compositions by Combo members, as well as popular reggae, waltz and swing pieces. Fedchock established his career as a jazz trombonist in 1980 when he joined the legendary Woody Herman Orchestra. He toured with Herman's "Thundering Herd" for seven years as musical director and a featured soloist. Fedchock has toured Europe with Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band and has performed at jazz festivals and concert halls around the world. As a solo artist, he has appeared throughout the United States and has toured Sweden and New Zealand as a guest trombonist/composer/conductor. A native of Cleveland, Fedchock is a graduate of Ohio State University and holds a master's degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music. Fedchock will lead a jazz clinic for musicians at 7:30 p.m. April 20 at Fraser Hall on Pickens Street behind the USC School of Music. Cost is $3 for the public.
