Winger lan Oscar-calib By College Press Service NEW YORK ? Debra Winger is in a good mood. No one could be blamed for expecting Winger to be in a bad mood. After all, every article about her seems to focus on her toughness, being dif ficult on movie sets, being unfriendly to the press and so on. Winger's reputation, put bluntly, is that she's a bitch. Lost in the gossip is the fact that Winger remains one of our best actresses, proof of which can be found on-screen in both "Shadowlands" and the smaller "A Dangerous Woman." In the devastating period piece "Shadowlands," which is based on a true story, Winger portrays Joy Gresham, a strong-willed American poet and writer whose letters to emotionally withdrawn British writer and theologian C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) lead to friendship and then a doomed romance. Directed by Richard Attenborough, "Shadowlands" is a major tear-jerker, as cancer eats away at the woman both Lewis and her young.son adore. What attracted Winger, star ol "Terms of Endearment," "An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Urban Cowboy," to "Shadowlands"? "Money," she joked at a recent press interview. "The wardrobe. She's always curious. I can't put my finger on it, because it was a combination of things. It was a feeling Igot that it was the right thing to do." Winger said the challenge of playing Greshamn was showing she wasn't entirely likeable, but to make the audience care about her anyway. The actress also felt responsible for doing justice to Gresham and making the film's maudlin material entertaining. "I researched the character," Winger said. "I didn't give it a thought," she said. "The script was so literate and beautiful, I'd have been a fool not to do it. I didn't think of what people might think." Mention is made of a potential Oscar nomination for her work in her two current films, though it's likely "Shadowlands" will earn her a ticket to Oscar night. Winger simultaneously smiles and cringes. "I don't like to talk about that," she said. "1 think (such talk) helps the business, but I don't want to depend on such outside things." One day, Winger may direct a film, but in the meantime she's seeking more good acting roles, which is easier said than done.
